Comments or corrections?

I posted on another forum asking if anyone there ever plays solo rpgs or dungeoncrwals. The responses I receivedfrom puzzlement to downright snarky. The first responses were of curiosity. from which they quickly evolved elitist comments to how stupid I was for asking such a question.

I was curious if these comments are typical from what others have experienced?

How ironic, since "solo" computer gaming is what 99% of shiftless geeks waste their time on. So you create a method of solo rpgs including random dungeon crawls, and somehow that is worthy of scorn? Morons….

^^^ shiftless geek?

Given how many rules sets have dedicated solo rules, it seems ignorant to bash on solo gamers.

Great War Ace09 Jun 2014 6:13 p.m. PST

Yeah, "shiftless geeks" are the lazy gamers who play 'puter games over miniatures, and no longer develop their own rules, and prefer 'puter gaming ALONE so that they can win all the time and not bother having to deal with anyone else, etc….

Come to Tunnels&Trolls. I write solo adventures for the game as do many others. We won't laugh if you play with yourself.

Précis Intermedia offer Ancient Odyseses: Treasure Awaits also a solitaire friendly dungeon crawl option.

And of course lots of us solo play many miniatures games.

And we put more work into it than buying a book of computer game hacks and cheat codes. ;)

Ed at Two Hour Wargames is putting together a solo/coop dungeon crawl game. You can read a little over at the THW forum: link

And here's a battle report from a test game: link

Edit: I guess I should have answered your actual question: No, I haven't come across many elitist attitudes, but I also don't frequent RPG forums. In fact, I've read elsewhere in the past (can't remember where) the same question and seen a lot of helpful responses.

My guess is that 99% of the people who hang out here play video games.

I enjoyed the Ravenloft game a lot, even though I don't like D&D! Pretty sure Warhammer Quest was one-sided too. Solo/Co-op dungeon crawl makes all the sense in the world. Don't listen to them.

A good place to look would be boardgamegeek.com There are plenty of dungeon crawl boardgames, and a number of them are for solo play IIRC

Cheers,
Aaron

"I was curious if these comments are typical from what others have experienced?"

Yes, quite typical. See, for example, the comments in this thread directed toward computer gamers and gaming.

@Great War Ace, the purpose of the ^^^ was to point at my name, since I spend far more time playing video games than miniature wargaming.

The main solo RPGs I've played have been Tunnels & Trolls and iirc there was one for Laserburn which I played a bit.

I mainly do this stuff on computers and game consoles now, so I expect I'm a shiftless geek who has to win all the time.

That was very unfortunate and yes I have encountered the same on occasion. Much less though than the times where folks reacted politely.

Of course there is always one member of the Algonquin Roundtable present to chortle over their clever sexual innuendo as well.

Folks is folks.

As a matter of possible tangential interest the solo PC gamer meme does not necessarily hold true. My boy plays PC games almost exclusively but refused to do so unless they are multiplayer games. I have even noticed that many newer games downplay or leave out any AI, while stressing their multiplayer potential.

I find the comments on solo computer games rather ignorant.

When you find me a solo minis game as fun as Mass Effect, Skyrim, Knights of the Old Republic, or Dark Souls I will listen.

Until then you're just as ignorant as the "elitist pc gamers" you are trying to insult.

As mentioned earlier castle ravernloft is good and the two other D&D games that followed ( I have Ravenloft and Drizzt ).
I have played these two solo and co- op with no problems quite happily.

I hear Gears of war is a type of sci- fi dungeon crawl based on an actual video game . Perhaps this will appeal to some shiftless geeks?

Mako1110 Jun 2014 1:29 p.m. PST

With responses like that, sounds like you are getting more positive reinforcement for your solo adventures.

Can't really comment on your question, since I've rarely posted about solo play on other forums, other than those catering to rules that facilitate them, like the Mythic, on their Yahoo Group.

Never had a problem.
