"Today marks the 25th anniversary of a dark day for Star Trek fandom: the release of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, or to give it its proper name, "The Worst Star Trek Movie That Isn't Star Trek Into Darkness."

Arguably, The Final Frontier is worse than Into Darkness. It not only matches that movie's nonsensical plot but adds layers of awkwardly unfunny comedy and bored actors, with the outcome an uneven, overly complicated mess. The plot of the movie may have been focused on the attempt of Spock's half-brother to meet God in the center of the universe, but what The Final Frontier is really about is what happens when a studio demands a blockbuster movie before everyone involved is ready to deliver one (Marvel, you should take note *cough*Ant-Man*cough*)…"

Anything that makes the TNG movies looks good has to be bad, and ST:V made those look like classics!

tberry740309 Jun 2014 12:51 p.m. PST

Not sure about that. I think the first "Star Trek" movie could give it a run for its money.

Privateer4hire09 Jun 2014 12:55 p.m. PST

Tberry. He speaks truth.

Garand09 Jun 2014 12:57 p.m. PST

The first Trek movie was one of my favorites, re-watch it more often than the others.

Star Trek The Motionless Picture was really bad, unless you wanted to count rivets on the hull of the Enterprise!

John the OFM09 Jun 2014 1:22 p.m. PST

I thought the one with Spock grokking with the whale was pretty bad.

Battle Phlox09 Jun 2014 1:56 p.m. PST

The First was the worst unless you suffer from insomnia. I'm surprised the franchise survived that snooze-fest.The whole last whale thing was pretty lame too.

Even star trek movies are better than odd ones..

But I still like the slow motion picture.

I liked the reviewer who said of the first movie that the entire plot was that v:ger wanted to get laid. Awful movie, great movie models. As to ST V, is that the one with the Uhuru fan dance? Awkward doesn't begin…

darthfozzywig09 Jun 2014 2:52 p.m. PST

There is but one good – nay, AWESOME – Star Trek movie.

Well I like Star Trek V – in fact I prefer it to IV.

The worst Star Trek movie was the reboot (IMOSHO).

Yep. V was total suckdom, on every level. I'm no fan of VI either, but it was better than V. And while I despise the reboots (as Star Trek), it's hard to make a worse Star Trek movie than V, even if you're JJ Abrams. The level of suckage that is V surpasses the point of return of a black hole.

On the other hand, it would have fit right in on season three of the original series… right after Spock's Brain.

And @ darthfozzywig. Amen! Preach it, brother!

GoGators09 Jun 2014 5:30 p.m. PST

As a teenager, I liked I the least. Pretty boring.

Not sure which one would be worst if I rewatched all now.

Saw Into Darkness on Netflix last week. It was a good Netflix movie; I think I would have been disappointed paying movie theater and baby sitter cash money for it.

I KNEW this was going to be about ST5. It hasn't been nearly long enough. What really bugs me is the number of times the really bad scenes simply pop into my consciousness without rhyme or reason. That is a testimony to me, to be careful what you put into your brain….

The Uhura fan dance… *shudder*

Now, I'd be willing to watch that scene with Zoe Saldana doing it. Mmmm… I'll be in my bunk.

DsGilbert09 Jun 2014 7:41 p.m. PST

Did Kirk order Uhura to get naked and dance while they hid behind and below her the whole time? That was his best idea?

Twilight Samurai09 Jun 2014 8:38 p.m. PST

Don't blame Kirk, someone wrote that scene!

Coelacanth193809 Jun 2014 9:26 p.m. PST

That's Paramont Studios for you.

David Manley09 Jun 2014 9:28 p.m. PST

Generations was the worst of the bunch.

Truly dreadful

KTravlos09 Jun 2014 10:12 p.m. PST

I liked it. I liked the guy playing Spock's half-brother. I did not take it seriously and thus enjoyed it. I think the best Trek movies for me is II and VI (the Undiscovered country). I also like Picard so there you go, something is wrong with me! :p

Maddaz11110 Jun 2014 2:27 a.m. PST

The internet does say…

The whole of star trek five, is a drink induced hallucination of Kirk, Spock, and McCoy, whilst they are on a camping trip.

This is based on the fact that life is but a dream brackets the action….

If this is the case… Then it's not a terrible, concept executed badly.

Otherwise… oh dear

Martin Rapier10 Jun 2014 3:13 a.m. PST

ST V was indeed fairly poor, and 'First Contact' wasn't much better (although bizarrely wikipedia reckons it is one of the most popular).

I rather like the JJ Abrams reboots for their wild exuberance, and Spock is very much a 21st hero, unlike Kirk, the 20th century caveman.

As for ST 1 being slow, well, films were more leisurely in those days. Try watching 'Alien' or '2001' now, they are still excellent films, but sooo sloooow.

DS615110 Jun 2014 3:59 a.m. PST

It was far from the worst.

The new ones hold that title, and likely won't let it go for a while.
After them, any of the TNG movies. None of them are good.

DsGilbert10 Jun 2014 6:16 a.m. PST

My favs of the TOS crew are II & VI (Directors editions). If TMP wasn't so bland looking sets and uniforms, I think people would view it differently.

Bob Runnicles10 Jun 2014 8:10 a.m. PST

"Generations was the worst of the bunch.

Truly dreadful"

THANK YOU David Manley!! Oh my God I would rather watch ST:V on a repeating loop than Generations. Sure there are a few nice FX set pieces but on the whole the TNG cast has ZERO chemistry for their first movie and it's far more likely to put me to sleep than ST:TMP (okay, except maybe for the V'Ger flyover sequences – those are a bit much lol). Generations though? Once we get past the prologue it grinds to a halt and far too much of it simply makes no sense.

tberry740310 Jun 2014 8:36 a.m. PST

Not to excuse the awfulness of ST:TMP but the director (Wise) always considered the theatrical release to be a rough cut of the motion picture he wanted to make.

Howler10 Jun 2014 9:17 a.m. PST

First movie was the one I looked most to seeing and is by far the greatest disappointment.

Personal logo javelin98 Supporting Member of TMP10 Jun 2014 9:22 a.m. PST

If TMP didn't spend 20 minutes mooning over the Enterprise refit…

Mako1110 Jun 2014 1:33 p.m. PST

Not sure I've seen that one.

The first one was horrible, other than the brief scene where the Klingons show up, and get wiped out almost immediately.

They were the best part of the movie.

skinkmasterreturns11 Jun 2014 8:25 a.m. PST

I got ALL the Star Trek movies as 2 boxed set for Christmas(this is what happens when you dont drop hints and allow people to simply buy gifts for you :)). I dont recall 5 in any way,I must have had a mind wipe. Now I'll have to go watch it.

Personal logo Parzival Supporting Member of TMP11 Jun 2014 12:39 p.m. PST

Then you'll just want to do the mind wipe again, which will lead you to watch it again, which will lead to another mind wipe, and you'll spiral into a much less satisfying remake of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind without the benefit of Kate Winslet to make it worthwhile. Don't do it, man, don't do it!
