Like on a musket stock or spear shaft, in 28mm. Any advice please? Thanks.

Paint item buff or cream, coat of Vallejo 828 woodgrain wash.

Repeat wash if a darker tone is required

I use foundry 'Musket Stock' (I think that is what it's called) triad. Paint the whole area in the darkest color. Then, draw thick lines with the mid color. Finally, draw thinner lines inside the thick lines with the lightest color.

Foundry also makes a spear shaft triad. I use that for lighter woods and ancient wood weapons, but same technique

I think I know what effect you mean Bede.

You are going to need very good eyesight lol..or a magnifier of some sort.

A very good brush, not too small, maybe a '0' sable of some sort, actually longer the better.

I would attempt it with two highly contrasting colours, always lightest first, then dark and then give it a brown wash to bring the stark edges together.

That tutorial looks really good thanks. Sitting down to do some spearmen for Saga, so I'll give it a go.

In real life, at that distance you wouldn't be able to make out the wood grain. So painting it in is a cartoony or exaggerated effect.

That said it can look good on a showcase figure. The tutorials linked above explain the technique as well as any I've seen.
