Have looked online but most are LW dunkle so was it grey, green, brown or what?

Seems to be panzer grey, or maybe sometimes a lighter bluer grey, presumably for luftwaffe owned ones. Try this search:

Yeah, it was a shock the first time my granddad told me they actually fought the war in colour. ;-)

The various early war equipment, ammo boxes, sMG mounts, Range finders etc, that collectors I know have is painted a dark green with a slight blue tint.
