I am looking to get a set of basic colours – to make a base set of paints for my EX GF eldest ( 13 ).

I intend to get him hooked on wargaming and painting, especially historical dark age and medieval gaming (possibly a bit of game of thrones style fantasy gaming as well)

I am not taking him into a Games workshop store – I don't want to lose him as a wargamer!

I am seeking advice on what basic colours I should get, from ranges that are easily available

UK based.

prefer

Vallejo, miniature paints, coat d arms, warlord army paints,

only want a small set (?)

I think I need…

1) Gunmetal / chainmail / dark silver metal
2) Gold / shining gold /
3) bright silver

4) White
5) Black
6) dark grey

7) deep Red
8) mid red

9) dark blue
10) mid blue

11) dark green)
12) forest green

13) leather brown
14) dark brown

15) bright yellow
16) mixing yellow

anything else – am I missing something obvious?
and any suggestions on which paint to get for each colour?

I will be getting a mid tone dip, and some flesh wash…

I can get them singly… my local store doesn't seem to have boxes, and some loon at royal mail HQ thinks twenty pots of paint are more dangerous than a single large bottle
of spirits!

I bought an Army Painter boxed set recently. Good spread of paints (pretty much everything he'd need) some decent brushes and some ink washes.

My only complaint is that the yellow (as so often is the case) lacks covering power.

Other than that, a great set.

Well, about your list:

1) Gunmetal / chainmail / dark silver metal
2) Gold / shining gold /
3) bright silver
- I am looking for metallics too, never used it. So no help here. :(

4) White
5) Black
6) dark grey
- Grey is just White + Black, so no need to buy this.

7) deep Red
8) mid red
- Look for a blood tone red, and a orange too. You can get orange by mixing Red + Yellow, but the result is not that vibrant.

I did only get one basic tone of any color to start, and its doing well until now. When i need to use other tone i just mix the paints. I guess it is good to start, and will help you to identify what you will really need to buy later.

And get some washes. Trust me, you will want it. I think flesh tone and black will do.
