I am trying to model New York during the Second Anglo Dutch War and am looking for a small Vauban style fort, which the Dutch had built there at that time, in1:1200 scale. I have checked with Langton miniatures but all he seems to carry in terms of forts are castles, although many of his other buildings will work fine. Does anyone have any ideas. |

I have built Vauban style fortifications in the past. I have never seen anything for sale that you can use. You will have to scratch build it. I suggest starting with a copy of the plans at 1:1200 scale. Use a copier to increase or decrease the size of your plans until they are what you want. Then use your 1:1200 plans as a template to cut the basic shape out of styrofoam. Card stock of various thickness can be glued to create parapets, firing steps, etc. You can paint it or use texture sheets to make it look like it is covered in brick or stone. |

Did you look at the city wall and ravelin pieces from Langton? I think you could make a decent fort using those pieces. If you look at my webstore, at the 1/1200 Napoleonic buildings section, city wall set, there is a pic. The pieces I think you can use are the outer wall sections. |

Have you considered Scott Washburn's Paper Terrain? The 6mm sets would be in the ballpark, I'd think (approx 1: 1,000 scale) link The Vauban style of fortification was used extensively in the 17th, 18th and early 19th century. While most were built in Europe, many examples can be found all over the world. And even though the style eventually became outmoded, Vauban-style fortresses remained in many places and even saw combat as late as World War II. PaperTerrain has a range of different kits that allow you to built the classic "Star Fort" with either 4 or 5 sides. We also have Vauban City Walls sets which include individual components like walls and bastions and gatehouses that will allow you to build a wide range of Vauban fortresses including city walls, harbor defenses and almost anything else you can imagine. In addition we have kits that include the outer works of a Vauban fortress such as the glacis and small ravelins. Available in 6mm, 10/12mm, 15mm, 20mm and 25/28mm scales. They also come in brick or stone finishes. In addition, we have a free set of Vauban Fortress templates which give you the basic footprint (outline) of the various components. You can print these out, cut them out and use them to plan out your fortress so that you will know exactly what you need to buy. You can download the templates from the PaperTerrain website or e-mail paperterrain @comcast.net to get the templates. SPECIAL NOTE: If you have bought our Vauban 4 or 5-sided 'Star Fort' kits, be advised that the walls in those kits will NOT work with the components in the Vauban City Walls sets. The geometry for the star forts is very exact and the ends of the star fort walls will NOT match up with the City Walls pieces. Also, while the bastions in the star fort kits will work fine with the City Walls sets you will need to buy the Bastion Connectors to allow them to fit properly. The gate houses, demi-lunes and barracks from the star fort kits are fully compatible with the City Walls sets Peter (no connection to the company, just plan to but a 28mm fort someday!) |
