I can name 3 characters in GoT that the author describes in the books as not all that attractive.
OSHA is middle aged and just plain skanky looking. She is played by Natalie Tena.
Ygritte is a gap toothed beanpole, played by Rose Leslie.
Brienne of Tarth is as homely as a box full of Craftsmsn socket wrenches. She is played by Gwendoline Christie.

Surely this is an outrageous affront to the author. Has the casting director no respect for Martin's vision? Has he/ she not even read the books ???
The only really ugly wench is the one Theon boffs on the ship as it comes into Pyke.

Gwen's pretty in RL but Brienne in the series is nothing to write home about. My mother-in-law is always remarking on how they "uglied that girl up".

Ygritte is described as fairly attractive in the books.

But hell, why stop your complaining with the women? Read how Tyrion is described and the. Compare that to (admittedly short) dreamboat Peter Drinklage.

I don't want to see ugly on the screen. I see plenty of ugly when I walk down the street or look in the mirror.

Mr Elmo05 Jun 2014 4:16 a.m. PST

There's that whole cave sequence.

I for one would not kick Ygritte out of bed for eating crackers.

I meant to say "in the books they are described…" but when I went in to edit it, I hit the dreaded Down for Maintenance hiatus. Now I know how the foreigners feel. grin

Deeman05 Jun 2014 5:18 a.m. PST

They are "Hollywood ugly".

15th Hussar05 Jun 2014 5:20 a.m. PST

Deeman has that right. At the very least they are "attractive" (to a given extent)in real life, they've been modified to fit your screen…so to speak.

Solzhenitsyn05 Jun 2014 5:35 a.m. PST

You want to watch ugly women rather than attractive topless ones? OK, to each his own.

Me? I'm fine with the show as it is.

nazrat05 Jun 2014 6:05 a.m. PST

I think they've done a superb job of casting and have no complaints whatsoever. But I watch select TV shows to enjoy myself and not to nit-pick the hell out of them… 8)=

Go back to your cell phone, Winston.

tberry740305 Jun 2014 7:16 a.m. PST

None of them are Lucy Lawless so Smokey won't care one way or the other.

darthfozzywig05 Jun 2014 8:01 a.m. PST

Has he/ she not even read the books ??

As with the show's writers, I hope not.

John the OFM05 Jun 2014 8:21 a.m. PST

They are castng Obara Sand for next season. She is described in the books as, as the Sergeant Major in one Monty
python skit would say "I mean, not attractive to men, Sir!"
We will of course end up with Selma Hayek to continue the trend. grin

John the OFM05 Jun 2014 8:21 a.m. PST

On the reverse side of this "discussion", I do not see what Tyrion sees in Shae…

I will not object.

On the reverse side of this "discussion", I do not see what Tyrion sees in Shae…

Dog-faced AND annoying as all get-out. Nothing but nag nag nag from her in every scene. Man, if I were Tyrion, I'd strangle her or something.

John the OFM05 Jun 2014 8:32 a.m. PST

Give her to Shagga.

Zakalwe6406 Jun 2014 7:01 a.m. PST

You are a heartless man, darth.

KTravlos06 Jun 2014 2:06 p.m. PST

Well Osha is not aesthetically pleasing by my criteria. Yara is, but I am betting she would not meet most peoples criteria of beauty.

John the OFM06 Jun 2014 7:45 p.m. PST

Oh, scrub her and comb her hair, and she's OK.

Winston Smith06 Jun 2014 7:48 p.m. PST

I just noticed what speelcheck did to Osha. It made her OSHA. Grrrrrr….

:p

Dervel Fezian09 Jun 2014 11:54 a.m. PST

Rose Leslie is ugly?

or Gilly:

Brienne is supposed to be homely in the books (avert your eyes)…

Now Yara was supposed to be pretty hot in the books, but well as you can see:

oh, and let's not forget Shae….

ever consider we look a little to superficially? Or maybe it's Maybelline?
