Other than officers there would hardly have been any armour at all. In Scotland even buff coats were rare and tended to go to the cavalry who even then often had to go without. In any case the terrain Montrose operated in was hardly armour country. This also explained the absence of artillery in the army. Most if the army would hardly look any different from their covenanting opponents namely hodden grey tunics and blue bonnets. Hope this helps. John |

The Strathbogie regiment had armour in 1639, but it's not known whether they still had any in 1644. As the Covenanters had been busy confiscating weaponry in the meantime it's anyones guess. as the good marshal says armour seems rare for any scots foot. |
