"Russian jet nearly collides with U.S. surveillance aircraft in ‘reckless' intercept in Asia A Russian Su-27 jet flew dangerously close to a U.S. reconnaissance plane over the Pacific northeast recently in an aerial clash not seen since the Cold War. An Air Force RC-135 electronic intelligence jet was flying a surveillance run some 60 miles off the Russian Far East coast, north of Japan, on April 23 when the incident occurred, according to defense officials familiar with the incident. The Su-27 flew to follow the RC-135, and at one point rolled sideways to reveal its air-to-air missile before flying within 100 feet of the cockpit in an attempt to unnerve the crew

at one point rolled sideways to reveal its air-to-air missile "Oh my gosh!" said the crew of the RC-135. "That Russian fighter jet is armed with a MISSILE! Never saw that before!" One of these days, probably sooner than later, one of these jet-jockeys or ship captains in the Far East is going to make a tragic mistake playing a game like this. US, Russia, China, Japan, Vietnam, North or South Korea, Thailand, eventually all of the military -waving is going to result in an accident. |

A shame more recon birds aren't armed with AAMs for self-protection for incidents like this. Even more so that they are not provided with armed "stealth jet" escorts a little above them, and just to the rear, to give the enemy something else to ponder. |

Mako et al, why the heck are they there off the coast lines of Russia north of Japan in the first place? ? Is it to be informed of impending attack? (Which their satellites can do anyway) or is it just to get up someone nose? Bet if Russki did this on as regular a bases as the US does there would be shock and quoted aggression from the US side too. And in the end WOW how much effort in all this as opposed to. Say, curing cancer eh? M2cW |

Yeah it'd be good when the USAF intercepts a Chinese or Russian ELINT aircraft and there's a couple of PAK FAs or J-20s ready to smack those pesky F-15/-16s out of the sky.
See what I did there?

Also where do they get these idiotic journalists? According to deGraffenreid, the Russians since the late 1940s have shot down 70 U.S. aircraft. That figure includes the Russian shoot down of Korean Air Lines Flight 007 in 1983, killing all 269 passengers. Since when are Korean aircraft US aircraft?!? |

So
that would be revealing the bottom of the aircraft, as in rolling to turn away? :-) Armed fighters intercepting recce/recon aircraft is nothing new, and fly-boys will be fly-boys – it's when you get two fighters chasing each other it starts to get a bit hot to the touch. |

Mako, our EP-3s used to pack Sidewinders for exactly this sort of thing. They're reputed to have shot down at least one Chinese MiG at some point or another. |
