It is hard to imagine a set of wargame rules, read aloud – even by the most talented thespian – being entertaining listening. Imagine DBA – the perfect cure for insomnia, IMHO! Although Brigadier Peter Young reading passages from Charge! might have been rather jolly
As might Johnny Depp, in the persona of Captain Jack Sparrow, reading some Pirate Rules – "Not rules – more a set of guidelines!"
Wargames rules are not really written to be read for pleasure, or aloud; they are for referring to – as infrequently as possible – during a game.
What we want is a voice activated computerised umpire that might work something like this:
PLAYER: I open up a long range bombardment on the enemy with my grand battery.
iUMPIRE: Your grand battery bombards the enemy for half an hour, but you see nothing significant through your spyglass.
PLAYER: I order Colonel Snort to advance to the attack with his brigade, while continuing the bombardment.
iUMPIRE: Colonel Snort protests that this will result in needless effusion of blood, but obeys your orders. His brigade advances against the enemy, but is repulsed and streams back in disorder
