A fascinating article about the Anzacs & their Weymouth connection. "Every night apparently they used to have a punch up, up Boot Hill between the British soldiers and the Australians – it was never very serious

I used to live on the site of the Westham camp. It is a lovely area, with access to nice countryside and sea air. Just what they deserved after fighting in that very tough campaign. A really nice little insight Huscarle thanks |

Yes great post! The Australian and NZ Army Liaison Officers from the Royal School of Signals at nearby Blandford regularly come down to lay wreaths at the Anzac Day memorial on the sea front. Theres also a private but very comprehensive collection of contemporary photos of the rest camps at the National Lilies centre I stumbled accross once but never found again – somewhere between Wyke Regis and Dorchester I think
When we first moved to the area my Aussie wife was comforted by all the Aussie street names around Littlemoor where she taught, and we realised they came from the initial tent lines for the wounded Anzacs
Her Great Grandfather, wounded at Pozieres, may have stayed more or less within spitting distance of her school! |
