"Fans of the popular book and film franchise The Hunger Games will recognize the hand signal instantly: the middle three fingers of the hand, raised to the sky. A gesture of resistance against the repressive government in the fictional world of Panem, it has now become a very real symbol of protest in Thailand at demonstrations against the junta that took power after the May 22 coup d'etat. Crowds making the gesture have been pulled off the streets, according to reports, and a lone protestor was dragged into a taxi and arrested after making the hand signal. "If it is an obvious form of resistance, then we have to control it so it doesn't cause any disorder in the country," military spokesperson Colonel Weerachon Sukhondhapatipak told the Associated Press. Although he said individuals would not be arrested for making the hand signal, "if it is a political gathering of five people or more, then we will have to take some action." When making a statement against the government with a hand signal gets you arrested your government is pretty far gone. |

Hmmm, used to be merely standing in the street, without moving, and chanting anti-government slogans was enough

We should all tweet against them and take selfies holding up signs with hashtags supporting the rebels! That 'll show the bastards we mean business! |

"Government? Just the usual bunch of self-serving thugs." Nothing stops self serving thugs who are out of government adopting tactics which make them look like repressed innocents. And there are always useful idiots who will serve any cause. We have two parties who are equally bad in Bangladesh. Having an army who keep those groups from disturbing commerce and people going about their business is a blessing. It is good to draw the line politicians in terms of where they get to interfere in people's lives. |

No need to worry about messy democracy if you have enough guys with guns on your side. |
