YouTube link What is the material that is surrounding the prints when they come out of the printer? It seems incredibly wasteful to me. |

I think the material is the same material that the print is made from, it just hasn't been fused together like the printed part. I'm sure it's re-usable in future prints, so it wouldn't be wasted. I have worked with a makerbot printer, and there is some waste associated with those prints – there are support structures needed if you are printing an overhanging object, for instance, but it's minor. |

If those printers work the same as the one I've seen, a hopper is slowly filled with a white power (one really short layer at a time). Then a print head passes over it spraying a binding solution and maybe colored ink. This continues for a while. Once the job is done, the loose powder is drained out and reused. Then the printed object is soaked in a sealing/cleaning solution. When dry, you can enjoy your new print. |
