Looking for the above to build casualty vignettes for 18th C. cavalry formations. Apart from the two Airfix Napoleonic sets and the Italeri AWI British Light Dragoons, are there any other sets containing suitable horse casualties?

TelesticWarrior03 Jun 2014 3:10 a.m. PST

Not that I can think of. Fortunately, horse casualties are very easy to depict simply by using normal horses and lying them down on a suitable base.
Rider casualties are slightly harder but can be great fun to model. I'll check to see if I have any photo's of previous work.

Airfix US Cavalry

Check out the "plastic soldier review" for details of other 1/72 sets

I think Ykreol do a some

Actually Ykreol seem to do dead everything

MIR do a number of dead horses in their slightly macabre sets of soldiers. Even the ones with innocuous names like 'British Napoleonic Checkpoint' just contain dead men and horses: link

I can re commend Ykreol, I've bought several sets from him
and they are excellent, he has a large range of 1/72 casualties
with several cavalry sets

Jim

thabear – that was my first thought. I think the French Cuirassiers had one too…

The Airfix French Cuirassiers did have one the rider was on his haunches behind the horse holding his sabre

Many thanks Gentlemen!

SJ Donovan, thank you for the picture. I had seen the other two dead cavalry castings from MIR, both more specifically Napoleonic, but overlooked the "British Checkpoint" – will have to check that one out ;-)

Thabear, thanks for the pointer towards US cavalry – I had browsed the PSR site but not that far. As it happens, several other US Cav or "Custer" sets include fallen horses, and early 18th tack should be easy enough to model onto them.

Telestic Warrior, yes using running horses is my Plan B, although getting the right pose for the "upper" legs seems a bit of a challenge (even on the MIR picture above they look a tad rubbery); would be interested in seeing your handiwork. Rider casualties present less of a difficulty for my project, as I'm working with the Zvezda GNW sets, which have dismounted dragoons.

Meanwhile, if anyone has spare fallen horses from any US cavalry set, Airfix Cuirassiers or Italeri British Light Cavalry, please let me know (armchairgeneral AT hotmail DOT com) and we may come to some arrangement.

What I have done is use normal horses from the plastic sets. I put down a good layer of plastic wood* on the base and then push the horse into it half covering it. When the plastic wood has hardened the figure is fixed in place. I've also used this method for figure casualties.

* Known as plastic wood in Australia. Not sure if it identified the same way elsewhere. It is a water based wood filler that hardens.
