Just finished watching this dark scifi animated series from 2006.

Set 5,000 years in the future following some kind of ecological disaster, the remnants of Earth's population survives in isolated domed cities scattered over the globe. The story concerns the quest of Vincent Law, Re-l Mayer, and a small, childlike robot named Pino, to discover the secret of Law's past and his connection to mysterious entities known as The Proxy.

Overall I would rate the series 4 out of 5 stars. The animation is excellent, the characters, technologies, and settings are interesting, and for the most part the series is well-conceived. At first I was concerned that Ergo Proxy was a cheap imitation of Ghost in the Shell, but the series is very different. The character of Re-l has a similar vibe to Makoto Kusanagi, but she ends up being quite unlike the bad-ass Major. My only gripe in regards to Ergo Proxy is that one episode was jarringly different in tone from the rest of the series, and another couple seemed somewhat pretentious on the part of the writers. With those minor objections aside, I would recommend Ergo Proxy.

In the case of gaming applications, there were a number of brief scenes of combat, but overall the plot seems more suited to a role-playing game. Infinity or 5150: Urban Renewal would work well for skirmishes in this setting.

I initially found this show to be interesting, but I gave up on it. It starts off quite well, then meanders through seemingly needless monster fights with the story going nowhere. The writers decided that the best way to move things forward at that point was to take you – the viewer – out of the story, place you in a fantasy television game show where the answers to all of the questions are the story elements they neglected to include while they were distracted by creating those monster fights.
I've read that this is pretty much the pattern for the rest of the show. Aimless wandering followed by jarring data dumps.
