I've had a bunch of 1/300 and 15mm WWI figures sitting around that I intended to do something with, but never did. Seems like a good time to paint them up and game with them. Any recommendations for rules? I'd prefer free or cheap, but let me know what you like and why. Thanks!

I like "If the Lord Spares Us" by Too Fat Lardies. It's for the Middle East theatre though.

Through the Mud & the Blood. Too Fat Lardies also but Western Front. Great set, great WW1 feel to them. The best set of WW1 that I've come across. I've also got Trench Wars, To the Last Man & 1916 & several others. Mud & Blood beats them all IMHO.

Lardies. Plus the title is really cool. :)

What level of game are you interested in? Personally I'm a big battle man for WW1, so division and up, for which both Great War Spearhead and Square Bashing are good contenders.

I was thinking of using the 15s for skirmish (trench raiding, etc.) and the 1/300 for big battle.

For lower level gaming, our group uses Chris Peer's Contemptible Little Armies. All you need is D6s and it's fast and bloody.

I am a fan of Iron Ivan's "Price of Glory". Not free, but cheap at $16 USD for PDF and print combo.

The game includes basic organization charts with more detailed national charts available free on the Yahoo group.

I find them easier to learn and play than Mud&Blood and also find them to work better for smaller games. Small being a relative thing when it comes to the Great War in this case I mean low tens vs high tens/100+

Take a look at the Raging Empire Rules 1914-1918 which are FREE to download from kallistra.co.uk

I just downloaded some great WW1 trench raiding/skirmish rules… Called "To End All Wars". Super simple, super fun and best of all, super free.

Through Mud and Blood by Lardies for tactical and Over the Top by GDW/ Great War Spearhead for operational.

If you can find it 'Unkindest Kut of All' by Chris Peers which appeared in Miniature Wargames was good fun.

Cheers
Mark

Through the Mud and the Blood for me is the best set.
