Finally played X-Wing last night. I know there are a number of non-FFG aftermarket accessories – any 'must-haves' ?

I have an idea for storage and I do plan to buy another base set for more TIEs and dice but anything else I should get beyond the ships ?

The movement rulers are used alot . I put all my cards into sleeves .

A playing surface. The whole thing just goes up a notch when played on even something as simple as black glitter felt. There are lots of choices available for almost any budget, from lots of sources.

Also, actual 3D asteroids on stands. You can buy these pre-made and painted, or do like I've recently done and grab a bunch of lava rocks, drill holes in 'em (use a masonry bit), glue golf tees into the holes (pointy end), glue the golf tees to the asteroid tokens to act as the bases (works great), prime black, dry brush gray, done.

I've seen the acrylic templates, and admit they're awesome, but I haven't found that I needed them.

Other than that, what you want are the expansion ships. Lots and lots of ships.

I love the Corsec green acrylic templates —they are especially great during a colllsion, you can hold them above the ship and see through the template while getting the collided position lined up correctly. (Their red ones are too dark to see through).

Ditto the Lava Rocks for asteroids!

And the other great accesory is a $5 USD Line Level from Harbor Freight. Unscrew it from the mounting base that's supposed to attach to a table saw. Just super for checking arcs of fire!

Card sleeves are good for protection, American Mini Board Game ones fit the small cards.

And clear ConTact paper to protect the dials! link

More ships! wink

In the dollar bins, WalMart sells these rubber balls that are maybe 2" diameter, and covered with spikes. Bounce them, and they flicker for about 30 seconds with different color interior lights.

Whenever a ship blows up, we raise the call for special effects and swap out the passed ship with a glowing ball of explosion, for a little while.

Someone else to play with.

Two basic sets for enough dice and rulers to go around.

Card sleeves are good.

That aside the existing game components are good enough for me – anything else just makes an already expensive game more expensive.

Quick tangent since we are on the subject of astaroids. Through my emense piloting skills I am almost constantly landing on the asteroids (I meant to do that). How does that work with the scenic asteroids? Do you make them removable with an asteroid shaped base that can be left on the table when a ship is sitting on them?

surdu200502 Jun 2014 6:02 a.m. PST

It's space. When you hit the asteroid, the ship bounces one way, and the asteroid bounces the other. :)

nochules02 Jun 2014 6:24 a.m. PST

That is a point where physics and the rules differ unfortunatly. :-)

Do you make them removable with an asteroid shaped base

Just so. My 3-D asteroids sit on top of the cardboard asteroids from the game. When the ship's 2-D base touches the asteroid's 2-D base, then you look up the rules for collisions. Everything else is just pre-painted eye candy.

The Senate ship and cargo containers here link add a lot to the look of the game instead of using the cardboard ones…

I put my rocks on clear hex stands that sit on top of the cardboard markers. Other space-debris also makes a nice visual scattered in the asteroid belt!

for convention games, I scan the pilot cards and print them out as 8 1/2 x 11.
upgrade cards go on file cards. Each player gets a plastig gup to store their tokens when not in play.
RR cinders make good asteroids.

Adding to the great suggestions here… a good BOX. Carrying a full collection and all the utensils is a major undertaking, and the right box makes the difference between a great game and a great game you can actually transport to a store and play.

I use a plano box.

nazrat02 Jun 2014 12:03 p.m. PST

I use a Battlefoam custom case. It's more expensive than Plano but there are spaces for every kind of ship and every counter, die, and template fits in the bottom compartment. I've never regretted the purchase!

And don't forget, my Solo rules are free to download from link

In case you want to practice before meeting an experienced player!

I would say a trench set so you can do the run on the death star.
