There was arguing in other topic yesterday – how many ranks on base infantry must have in 6mm. I decided to sculpt some 6mm figures and check it out.

First figure on worktable..

You are an artist sir! Your DAK figures are truly astounding.

KaweWeissiZadeh01 Jun 2014 5:54 a.m. PST

You might well set a standard if the above is true 6-7mm

von Winterfeldt01 Jun 2014 9:12 a.m. PST

impressive sculpting (as usual)

Toronto4801 Jun 2014 10:03 a.m. PST

The figures go back to 2010 but there is no indication that any are for sale From the pictures they look lie a large 6mm How much detail would survive the casting is still an open question ?

Thanks!
Yes, exactly 6mm from ground to eyes.

Must fix eyes and musket.. and add shako and rolled overcoat.

Sho Boki Sponsoring Member of TMP01 Jun 2014 10:59 a.m. PST

Toronto48. I start sell my 15(18)mm works on last year.
See here..
boki.ee/Painted_Figs/Painted_Figs.htm

How much detail would survive the 6mm casting is right question.
I dont know yet.
But I will ascertain.

And what do you mean by large 6mm? Napoleon on this picture are exactly 6mm (from ground to eyes).

First picture on your post are visual evidence for one TMP topic, where people arguing, in what scale uniforms goes generic. Little figures there are only plane samples, quickly sculpted and destroyed after photoshoot.

Enough for today, finish on next day.

Those are amazing, although I doubt I could do them justice in painting them…

Toronto4801 Jun 2014 2:58 p.m. PST

Hi Sho

First of all I love your figures and would definitely buy them when you get them up into production. I am a big 6mm fan and prefer gaming in that scale.

I did not mean to criticize your figures by putting them into the "large " category A lot of gamers confuse 5 and 6mm figures so I wanted to show that you figures are on the size level as Alder and Baccus although your anatomy and proportion look better.

Nice Sho! Love 6mm figs. Yours look fantastic.

Sho Boki Sponsoring Member of TMP02 Jun 2014 10:13 a.m. PST

Thanks. :-)

Toronto48, initially I don't have plans to put them into production. But so many people already ask this, so if I am happy with final result, I will put this little fellow into production.

When I sculpt my first 6mm in 2010, I choosing, in wich scale I want to sculpt. After trying different scales, I stays on 15(18)mm and set goal – one day I want to sculpt as good as Tony Barton.
My 2010 year 6mm figures are without wired skeleton, I sculpt them half by half, on plain paper. I am not happy with them.

But now fresh picture from last little fellow.
Must add shako's side shevrons and bayonet scabbard.

Dr Mike Salwey02 Jun 2014 10:32 a.m. PST

Excellent – I really would recommend doing some test casts of your work, these deserve to be in production!

CaptainKGL02 Jun 2014 2:50 p.m. PST

I agree with Mike. Test cast some.

Sho Boki Sponsoring Member of TMP03 Jun 2014 8:30 a.m. PST

24 pieces I cast anyway. As I say in first comment, I sculpt them for testing – how many ranks are needed in 6mm for portraing on table thin line of battalions. Must be two or one are enough.

Now all needed details added and after hardening I do final elaboration before molding.

von Winterfeldt03 Jun 2014 9:44 a.m. PST

AB sculpts on tiles and uses FIMO – simply amazing

Sho Boki Sponsoring Member of TMP03 Jun 2014 11:11 a.m. PST

1/6 heads, yes. And standing figures too.
But I never found pictures, how AB sculpt marching 18mm napoleonic infantry figures.
I have now pack of Super Sculpey, but consider Tamiya Putty better for me.

Sparta03 Jun 2014 1:12 p.m. PST

I think it looks great. Whatever people choose to call them, I think compatibilty with the Adler range would be a great target.

arthur181504 Jun 2014 2:59 a.m. PST

Incredible workmanship! I would have thought the figure was at least 10/12mm ( if they were, I'd buy them like a shot!)from the detail, even 15/18mm.

Sho Boki Sponsoring Member of TMP04 Jun 2014 11:05 a.m. PST

Varnished, ready for moulding..

..and according to comparation chart, showed above by Toronto48, more in range of Baccus than Adler.

Arthur1815, you collect 10mm figures? Or 12mm?
Who is the best producer of such scale napoleonics?

danikine7405 Jun 2014 6:19 a.m. PST

i m waiting for you to make my old gurds brigades…

Sho Boki Sponsoring Member of TMP05 Jun 2014 6:36 a.m. PST

First half of mould.. everything looks normal.. no bubbles..

Gurds? Some muslim ot Indian troops?

Sho Boki Sponsoring Member of TMP05 Jun 2014 7:33 p.m. PST

First castings..

von Winterfeldt05 Jun 2014 11:01 p.m. PST

for testing this ok, but you should use a professional caster to give credit to your sculpting skills.

Sho Boki Sponsoring Member of TMP06 Jun 2014 2:12 a.m. PST

You are right of cource, but there are one little problem, we don't have one on entire country. It's may be, that I am the only one.. This is the reason, why I try to learn the casting secrets, as before I learn the painting and sculpting secrets.

CaptainKGL06 Jun 2014 3:46 a.m. PST

I like the casting Sho. Lots of potential here. Sucks about the casting situation but I'm sure you'll master that too.

von Winterfeldt06 Jun 2014 8:04 a.m. PST

Maybe you can outsource the casting – it certainly distracts you from sculpting and painting – you could produce more masters in case you don't have to worry any longer about casting

Sho Boki Sponsoring Member of TMP06 Jun 2014 11:57 a.m. PST

Thanks, CaptainKGL. The casting results are perfect and the only problem is the length of bayonets. But I hope to resolve this with air escape paths.

You confusing me, von Winterfeldt. What is the difference for outsource the casting to professional caster and using professional caster?

Danikine74, you probably mean Old Guard? Sorry that I don't understand instantly.

Sho Boki Sponsoring Member of TMP06 Jun 2014 10:08 p.m. PST

Sho Boki Sponsoring Member of TMP08 Jun 2014 6:36 a.m. PST

I have done experiments with my unpainted figures.
Must say, that in spite of how many I love only one range, in 6mm the two ranges are better.
The two rows of shiny bayonets looks good and what is more important – only one range tend to fall over.
Therefore I prepare now strips with 6 soldiers, 15mm x 3mm. Two such strips in two ranks (12 soldiers, 15mm x 6-7mm) may form half of game unit and with this halfunits we may form line (30 x 7mm), column (15 x 14mm) or square for full unit.
Is this OK?

Sho Boki Sponsoring Member of TMP08 Jun 2014 11:09 a.m. PST

Strip looks like this..

Sparta08 Jun 2014 11:53 p.m. PST

That is goin to look really well. Amazing if you can cram 6 figs of scu detail into 15 mm.

Sparta09 Jun 2014 3:05 a.m. PST

Going to look ….. such detail ….. :-)

Are you planning on a whole range, or just a gew figs?

Sho Boki Sponsoring Member of TMP09 Jun 2014 3:49 a.m. PST

Couple of days ago I have only plan to test my sculpting and casting capabilities today in 6mm. But I am so happy with results that I allready converse this figure to grenadier, austrian infantryman and russian musketeer too.
Then I will make them available and if people are happy with them too as I am.. then I go to full range. In addition of my 15(18)mm range of course.

Edzard10 Jun 2014 7:47 a.m. PST

These look good, I hope you get a miniatures line off the ground!

Sho Boki Sponsoring Member of TMP30 Jun 2014 12:05 a.m. PST

Fresh masters on table.

flipper01 Jul 2014 11:58 a.m. PST

Hi

Nice, very nice!

I will be interested to see how you deal with flag bearers!

As they tend to be frail…

CaptainKGL05 Jul 2014 4:44 a.m. PST

Looking great

The Burt05 Jul 2014 11:12 p.m. PST

OUTSTANDING. I, too, sculpt in the 6mm scale so I know how difficult it can be. Truly exceptional. Keep up the good work!

Sho Boki Sponsoring Member of TMP07 Jul 2014 5:22 a.m. PST

Thanks guys!
Molds hardening in the oven, on the evening I begin casting.
Then it will be clear, are they worth something or not.
Hold your fingers crossed..

CATenWolde07 Jul 2014 5:35 a.m. PST

Hi Sho – I'm glad to see that you've been hard at work! These look great … and since you are experimenting, might I just note that no one currently does an early Austrian line in 6mm (the 1790's uniform with the casquet headgear, used during Napoleon's Italian campaigns and even through the later Switzerland and Marengo campaigns). A range compatible with Adler's great early French range would be great!

I'm not sure about the 15mm strips – it might be that a 20mm width would be more popular in terms of base sizes?

Cheers,

Christopher

Sho Boki Sponsoring Member of TMP07 Jul 2014 6:15 a.m. PST

Hi Christopher..
When 6mm doll is ready, the surface sculpting is relatively easy to do, imho. So all armies can be sculpted easily, if compare with 15mm scale. But I afraid, that the real problem is the casting.. all this tiny bayonets.

Strips length is experimental. French fusiliers can fit in 15mm, but new ones sadly not. Russian rolled greatcoat over the shoulder, Austrian canteen and French greanadier sword don't let put neighbours hands behind each other.

CATenWolde07 Jul 2014 7:23 a.m. PST

You can stretch them out a bit and it will still look very good. Keep in mind that both Adler and Baccus fit 5 figures per 20mm, so you have plenty of room to play with.

I wonder if there is anybody over here around H'sinki that does casting?

Sho Boki Sponsoring Member of TMP12 Jul 2014 10:28 a.m. PST

Damn! 3 days I cast and get no one fully casted strip, allways some figure don't get his bayonet. Gravity casting don't have enough pressure.
Solution.. I order centricast machine from Tiranti and try with 3 figure strips. This must be work..

LeonAdler Sponsoring Member of TMP12 Jul 2014 3:16 p.m. PST

Im afraid your going to be seriously hamstrung without the proper production kit and even then its not quite as simple as it looks.
L

von Winterfeldt13 Jul 2014 3:25 a.m. PST

I agree with Leon Adler, why not contact Griffin in the UK or Schilling in Germany, both seemingly excellent casters.

Sho Boki Sponsoring Member of TMP15 Jul 2014 5:24 a.m. PST

This may be the next step, if I fail with centricast machine..

Sho Boki Sponsoring Member of TMP18 Jul 2014 7:41 a.m. PST

New gravity mould with 3 figure strip.

CATenWolde18 Jul 2014 8:23 a.m. PST

Well, the ones on the right seem to look just fine! Is the strip 15-20mm?

Sho Boki Sponsoring Member of TMP18 Jul 2014 8:48 a.m. PST

Left ones are as casted. You may then paint them separately and pull together after.. and they stay as right ones.
Strip with 3 figures is 8 x 4 mm.
