I have just come back from the newly refurbished 'In Flanders Field' Museum in Ypres and it is truly excellent.

We spent about two hours browsing all of the many exhibits on display. Everything was in four languages and well laid out. It is far better now than the old layout which had very little substance in it. The new graphics and films are really good and especially the 'then and now' pictures.

The entry fee was €9.00 EUR and felt I got very good value for my money. This included entry into an extra exhibition afterwards.

The new cafeteria and souvenir shop are also excellent!

Highly recommended during your next trip to Ypres.

That is good news!
I did the Expo 14-18 in the belgian army museum in brussels for 12 euro this weekend. WWI was shown without any horror at all…. Not sure what to think of this.

Greetings

Thanks Rudi

I haven't seen that exhibition yet but am planning to in the next week or two.

I visited the 14-18 Exhibition in the Royal Army Museum today for 9 euro (I am retired so got a reduction)and was quite impressed. It is not intended to be a military exhibition so best not to approach it in that way. It is dedicated to what happened in Belgium from the civilian and military point of view. It deals with the King, the Kaiser, the ordinary people, daily life, food shortages, the Dutch border fence, resistance, the German administration as well as the military aspects and is very interesting for that reason. I thought it was 9 euro well spent.

Broglie,

Thanks for that. I last went there in May last year and thought it was very bland indeed (though not as bland as the appalling Centre Juno Beach).

May of last year – I did not think it was open that long.

You must remember that modern museums are not aimed at military history buffs or wargamers like ourselves.

The modern idea is to portray the lives of ordinary people. This attracts more fee paying crowds. The 14-18 exhibition claims to have had over 50,000 visitors so far. At an average of 10 euro a head that is 500,000 euro. Not bad. If it was military only they would never get 50,000 people.

Sad for us but good for their coffers.

Thing is, my mate (who has no interest in wargaming) and our wives all thought it was pretty poor and not as good as it had been in 2006.

Sorry to hear that. My wife was with me. She has no interest in matters military but she was enthralled by the museum. She would have stayed longer but I had to go for coffee.

By a weird quirk of fate, I found myself talking to the director of the museum at a party on Saturday night! What a thoroughly nice chap and I won't hear a word said against his museum.

;)
