Is it common for French wargamers to play the Franco-Prussian War (Guerre franco-allemande de 1870)? Or, do you prefer to avoid this war with its tragic outcomes? Vous pouvez répondre en français. |

I heard that some play it. But it is really not a big subject of interest. The problem is not only the "tragic" outcome (a big French defeat) it is the whole subject of the reign of Napoleon III. The great writer Victor Hugo called him "Napoléon le Petit" (= the Small). This period has interesting aspects but for many reasons the late 19th century French historians who tried to build a national history (to prepare the next war with Germany, WW1) had a problem with Napoleon III. Admirers of Napoleon Bonaparte despised him. Royalists despised him. Republicans hated him. The left, socialists and anarchists, hated him. When talking about France this did not let many supporters! :) Modern French opinion is still somewhat influenced by all this
