A Soldier of the Great War by Mark Helprin, was a great fiction account of the war in Italy told during more modern times to a younger man. Published in the 1990s and was a very popular book.

One of my all time favorite books. Helprin is an artist with words and vividly captures the Italian experience in WWI. He makes really effective use of "magic realism" without spoiling the historical aspects of the story. A truly haunting and beautiful book.
