This was a photo of a modern day Afghan vineyard that someone had posted on TMP. I used it to model a vineyard in the 2nd Afghan War and added some Highlanders making their way through it.The vineyard I made was constructed on a 12 inch by 12 inch VCT floor tile. Excuse the misspelling of Afghan in the title.

Rhingyll, that is FANTASTIC work!!! Looks so real, but also useful and playable. Love to see those old faithful Wargames Foundry NWF Highlanders as well! |

Thanks for all the compliments.I darkened the dirt mounds up a bit in the final picture as they were a little to light in color. I had to space out the dirt mounds further than I thought to be able to accomodate figures with 1 inch bases. Next up in the world of terrain will be an olive orchard followed by a pomegranate orchard. Figurewise, I have one regiment of kilted Foundry Highlanders and I have been tempted to replace them with Perrys. But,as they were one of the first NWF units that I ever bought, might be 20 years ago now, maybe not, I am going to keep them and save a little money as I only ever anticipate fielding one kilted unit in a battle anyway.Biggest challenge ahead now is the 72nd. |

Rhingyll, seems like you and I are in opposite positions, Highlanders-wise! You have your kilted 92nd but are in need of the 72nd in trews, while I have my 72nd in trews, but am in need of the kilted 92nd. I have a nice unit of old Ral Parthas in kilts, but they are a bit too small. I've been waiting several years for Empress Minis to follow through on their promise to cover every unit that served in the Zulu AND First Boer wars, by creating figures for the 92nd, who shipped out of India to the Transvaal with the exact same uniforms, weapons, and old-style equipment they had recently used in Afghanistan. I may just knuckle under and buy a unit of the Perry Sudan Highlanders, or those same older Foundry figures you have. Maybe first I'll send Empress an email to ask if there's any chance of the 92nd showing up for sale on their website before the end of this year. Meanwhile I look forward to seeing your Afghan orchards! |

MG, I like the looks of the Pontoonier Miniatures British. They seem to be almost identical in size to Empress. I wonder if they are considering doing some kilted Highlanders? I am going to buy some Pontoonier British and put them in khaki with the blue home service dress trousers as I do not have a unit with that uniform combination. |

MG, Studio Miniatures have some very nice figures as well.Looks like they have plans for kilted Highlanders.Go the following response from them today: Thanks for the email. We are doing another two packs of Afghans then it is on to the Highlanders followed by Gurkhas. They will be out later in the summer. Hope that helps. Thanks Stuart Studio Miniatures |

Hey, Rhingyll, The Studio Miniatures NWF figures are nice, but they're a little too modern for me to use for Second Afghan War, with their Lee-Metford magazine rifles, but that's just me! I like Pontoonier Third Burma War British for the Second Afghan War, and the uniform you plan to paint them in is my own personal favorite worn by British infantry during the war, other than the 72nd Highlanders in their trews. I also like the Pontoonier Gurkhas. Unfortunately I don't think they'll be making any new figures for that range, but if they do, I will buy some. The Studio Miniatures line infantry and to-be-released Highlanders in kilts would be perfect for the various NWF campaigns of the 1890s in Waziristan, Chitral, Malakand, and Tirah -- but I would have no problem playing in a game on your table that uses them for Baba-Wali or any other Second Afghan War battle! I haven't emailed Empress yet, but now, inspired by your own efforts re: Studio Miniatures, I will go and do so

Empress says the 92nd are coming, but not until after they release all the units from the Zulu War first, so not for some time. |

Rhingyll, those are amazing very well done. Your game table is Excellent. Terrain most definitely worth fighting for
.. Between you and Mad Guru the bar has certainly been set! We have tables to aspire to. I'm in a worse situation than both of you
.lol. I have many units for borh the NWF and the Sudan, but none include ANY Highlanders at this point. Sacrilege, I know. I had planned on bldg both named units but never purchased troops for either yet as my unpainted lead pile is still so huge. Right now I just can't bring myself to spend the money with all my current family responsibilities. One day when I find some on sale somewhere I'll pick them up. Please keep posting your inspirational pics. Cheers, JB |
