ARE YOU A TOURNAMENT PLAYER?
Do you enjoy playing wargames of any kind with a group of friends, at a game store or while at a convention for enjoyment. Please ring in with a simple: Yes, NO, or SOMETIMES. Asking as part of a marketing plan.
Thank you in advance for you re[ply.

TMPWargamerabbit27 May 2014 11:13 p.m. PST

No. Just not my cup of tea or game style.

(Sorry, added period)

Team games, one on one friendly scenarios or uneven… but no "pointed tournaments" for this rabbit.

carojon27 May 2014 11:35 p.m. PST

No thanks, I'll go with the rabbit

Wouldn't touch tournament play with a barge pole.

I play in the local club league – this year Dystopian Wars – but no one takes it too seriously. I enjoy the annual HotT competition run by Steve at Berkeley Vale but would enjoy it as much without any form of results or competition. Which is lucky given my usual performance.

I have played tournaments with Impetus (ancients) but otherwise, a big no.

I got turned off by the power gamers and rules lawyers that took all the fun out of the games, especially the WH40K crew.

Outside of Imeptus, whose players I find to be good sports and good gamers, I only play for fun.

Dave Crowell28 May 2014 6:28 a.m. PST

No! I have tried it with several different games and different groups of players. I think I would prefer root canal.

Oddball28 May 2014 6:41 a.m. PST

Years ago I played in tournaments for the Star Wars miniatures from Wizards of the Coast at local hobby stores. I really enjoyed it.

Have never really played in any other events.

I'm also a no. Many years ago I did some tournaments and ran across immature players and those who didn't really even know the rules well enough to be playing. Last one I played in, an Army captain was actually trying to invent rules! It was like playing with a child and I had to pay money to participate, as well as take time off from work. Never again.

John the OFM28 May 2014 6:58 a.m. PST

I used to be one, with WRG Ancients. I was never all that good at it. But it did indulge my love of painting huge and diverse armies.
I have said it before, but WRG Ancients tournaments are almost single handedly responsible for the huge variety we have in available miniatures.

I dropped out of The Hobby™ for 10 years, and when I came back I was more interested in playing games at cons that my son and I could play together. The tournament bug did not re-bite me.

Intrepide28 May 2014 7:42 a.m. PST

Sometimes.

I run hot and cold about tournament participation for the same reasons TKindred points out, albeit in another genre. Until the rules or atmosphere is wrecked by the 'win at all costs' cadre, I really enjoy them to the point I could almost say 'yes'. 95% of my painting and army building actually gets done to participate in tournaments.

Long ago, yes. Then no tournaments for decades, except chess. Now I've done a few FoW tournaments, just to support our local group. I don't enjoy one-on-one games as much since they inevitably get a bit personal.

Yes.

Based on the poll so far though, I'm suprissed anyone can find enough people to hold a tournament. :-)

I actually met all the people I regularly game with at tournemnts, so it has worked well for me.

Really depends on the local gaming crew.

If it's a bunch of friendly folks, sure, I'll play in a tournament. Back when, having a tournament coming was a great way for me to get minis painted. I've really slowed down on getting things painted since I stopped playing in tournaments.

But if it's a bunch of win-at-any-cost douchebags, not even with 11th ACR's figs and Rabbit pushing them!

Also, historical tournaments can get wonky if they cover too much time. If your game has army lists or campaign books (like Flames of War or Battlegroup), grouping them into tournament classes would be worth it, or explicitly stating that tournaments should ONLY be run out of a single campaign book.

The poll results may just indicate that Lion in the Stars' "win-at-any-cost douchebags" don't hang out on TMP. I'm sure there are plenty of them out there, but they're probably too busy min-maxing their next perfect army to chime in on our little survey.

Oh, and to answer the question: no.
