Great article and one that reflects a lot of my own "arm chair general" analysis. The problem with F-35 is not really the F-35. The problem is it's the only egg in the basket and the war/opponent it's designed for no longer exists (i.e. relatively short range combat against middle powers with advanced IADS). And I'm glad someone pointed out that the usage of advanced high tech fighters for Air Sovereignty/Air Policing missions is beyond overkill. Interesting comments involved the acquisition of new model of F-15 and F-16 – proposed F-15G SEAD jets and dual seat F-16F Block 70 (I assume upgraded version of current F-16F Block 60 as operated by UAE).
I don't necessarily agree with the plan – too many platform types in service which complicates logistics.
I still think a longer ranger revamped FB-22 and multirole F-22C is what the USAF really needs if it wants to maintain it's capability in the Pacific region. |
