OK, so with my newly discovered interest in the WotR, kindled by a great game of the Battle of Wakefield at my FLGS yesterday, which board should I now frequent to learn more, Medieval or Renaissance?

I always thought of it as being closer to Medieval but it does have some elements of Renaissance fighting in it.

Medieval probably. If it were the almost contemporary Habsburg–Valois Italian Wars I'd say Renaissance.

Cardinal Hawkwood25 May 2014 7:37 p.m. PST

generally thought of as the later middle ages

I usually lurk on the Medieval boards for WOTR info.

In my mind its more late medieval in character.

Medieval, yes I concur…

…but periodization is a construct not always applicable or neatly fitting into the history we study…

4 for medieval, 2 fence sitters, and 2 showboating…

Medieval it is then – thanks! :-)

The old British-centric view was that the Wars of the Roses marked the end of the Medieval period and the start of the Tudor period was where the Renaissance began.

It didn't really fit the same timeline as Europe, but who cares about them…..

This was a time when you could get a news report "fog in the Channel – the Continent is cut off"!

Yes definitely Medieval.

rampantlion26 May 2014 9:15 a.m. PST

Medieval in my mind. Renaissance seems to start a few years later…at least in my mind.

Zargon26 May 2014 10:10 a.m. PST

Answer is YES its in both. Cheers

England was "medieval" clear up till Henry VIII. Yes, Renaissance elements were entering the picture, but continental commanders looked on English armies as outmoded and rustic until they dumped the longbow, which didn't happen till the last half of the 1500s….

definitely medieval in my mind, though admittedly in its last phase.
