As the title says, has anyone used G.O.B.S. for fighters only games? I'd like something that allows a fleet of fighters ranging from 30-40 ships a side, flying in wings of 3-5 birds. Inspired by new Battlestar Galactica, I picked a bunch of not-BSG from Studio Bergstrom last fall. So I think you guys can see what I'm looking to do. Any ideas? Thanks! -Edgar |

No, but after taking a look at the rules, I see absolutely no reason why it would be unsuitable for fighters. I personally hate space-opera-style stuff so it ain't for me, but I'd say go for it. Obviously, ship classes would be different- fighters in GOBS might correspond to drones, frigates might be light fighters, carriers, some sort of light tanker, that sort of thing. |

So how would you handle this type of project? Any rules recommendations? |

The other one that might be good would be Starmada |

Just to be sure, 'wings' are still using independent models, correct? Or 'wings' as a stand of three to five models that never act independently except as to die? Doug |

I'm looking to go independently based models, yes. |

Gotcha; I am a fanboy so take with copious sodium chloride, but still think FT would be a better fit than the latter two suggested. Still, those numbers would challenge me in any game, so I'd probably give GOBS a close look. It's designed for those kinds of numbers, and reported to do well with same. Doug |

G.O.B.S.! with fighters should work in terms of the numbers you want, but your ships are gonna blow up in the scores. Fighters just can't take a pounding the way capital ships can. That's by design, of course, as G.O.B.S.! is meant to be a capital ships game more than a dogfight simulator. But give it a shot, and tell me what happens! |

Will do! The idea is to have a bang up, fun game, so it should be a blast! Heh! |

Okay, mister clarification-issues again. You ARE talking about running fighters as if they were individual ships, right? No problem using ship designations for all the fighters, right? Jon Tuffley made a fighter game called Tacship, really simple, but a bit more than GOBS, methinks. However, I really prefer using FT, but making fighters scout/courier thru frigate sized. Maybe DD's as gunboats on occasion. Course, I limit the arcs of fire on EVERYTHIHG, and dabble with limited element/squadron/flight rules. If I really got serious, I'd borrow some such rules from AoG's Fleet Action. Doug Doug |

Hello again Doug, and yes I want to run the ships as individual fighters, using Betgstrom's 1" fighters. It seems to me that Tacship is more of a dogfight game. I'm looking for bigger numbers. I'll need to give Tacship a run through begore I stick with that assumption, though. I think GOBS will work for this, but tomorrow I'm playing a regular game of GOBS so won't know for a while longer. I'm actually pretty happy with Star Wars X-Wing for my smaller actions. |

X-Wing does seem to do the job well, though I've been burnt pretty nastily with 'barrel rolls'. ;->= Doug |
