Hi all,

I am going to be getting into Naval Thunder:Bitter Rivals and am wondering how you build your fleets? Are they points based or is there some other way of doing it?

I am new to the Navy Lark :-) so forgive me if the question is stupid.

cheers,

Pete

Scenarios!

Thanks todd? Does that not make things…unbalanced? I am used to army lists based on points and things….

There is a point value system… but depending on the settings of the game, it can fail to balance it. Which is to be expeced, after all naval battles in real life were rarely balanced.

This said, I'll still have a suggestion, if you still want balanced games. You can pick a setting where ships, although different, are in the same league. Best one, IMO, is the cruisers night action in the Solomons in 42-43 (just know that if you take a Brooklyn or Cleveland class "light" cruiser, you should put 2 light or 1 heavy japanese cruiser against it). Or you might opt for the Mediterranean, the Royal Navy and Regina Marina, historically, were well matched in this theatre. Or if you go the hypothetical route, you can explore what a war between France and Italy would have been – they had, after all, kept matching each other's forces for 20 years.

The points are sometimes helpful but only in relationship to ships of similar class. You can't for example say one battleship is fair fight against eight destroyers, though the points might say so.

As for scenarios, sure they may be imbalanced but that's part of the fun. Almost every historic scenario will be imbalanced but that doesn't mean you still can't "win" by doing better than historical.

You will like NT, it gives a fun game with historic flavor.

Unfortunately, points systems in naval games are rarely that useful in balancing a game. Your best bet is to use 'like vs like' or check out various scenarios or actual actions.

Thanks Guys, your answers were really helpful – looking forward to getting on with the games now – in 1/6000 to start with – then up to 1/2400 in time!

Painting and basing should be fun in 1/6000 :-)

Play a few historical scenarios. After seeing how they work out you can always adjust for "what ifs" to make better games for either or both sides if necessary.

Thanks Don, that is what we have decided today – starting off with the Norwegian campaign :-)Just need some more DDs and T boats.
