Pathfinder – New PC's! New setting! Despite rolling Initiative only twice in 5hrs of play, we almost had a TPK our first adventure… via roleplay! Wow…

Enough detail to get you going… the PC party has a writ from the Korvosa city Magistrates and the Academae to explore an underground tomb recently uncovered in the Gray District to evaluate its threat level for undead (and for the Academae, to find out if there are any Thessalonian relics therein.)

The Church of Pharasma holds sway over the Gray District (it is after all a big graveyard) and the bishop there has serious issue with, "Interlopers disturbing the rest of those whom have passed." She set up roadblocks preventing our access.

Quite a bit of roleplay confronting her with our lawful authority. Even with a PC acolyte of Pharasma already in the party to ensure we do nothing "untowards" regarding the peace of the dead, she will not budge and is a bit manic about it.

Some visits to lawful authorities, an arrest warrant and a platoon of city guardsmen to assist later – she casts Greater Command telling the City Watch to "Leave!", then summons an extremely powerful extaraplanar creature while in the cathedral to intimidate the rest of us into backing off (we're 1st and 2nd level!) She then stone-shapes reinforcing the closed doors to prevent anyone from seeing her and stormed off to her chambers.

While the rest of us backed off the cathedral and that imposing extraplanar entity… the PC Pharasma acolyte was still actually INSIDE with her and made the point to the remaining Pharasma novices and acolytes that the bishop has lost it, this is NOT what their goddess would do or want. Rolled a 20 on his Diplomacy and won them all over.

We got more Paladin and Hippogriff-riding knight city defenses, we all go in with the help of the Pharasma novices to arrest her for treason (she attacked a lawful watch commander with magic) – she transforms into a winged *something* and flies off, killing two of the six hippogriff knights in her airborne escape…

to be continued…

Very cool. I wish I had a D&D group.

Nice. Keep us updated. I want to hear about the connection between all the dead and this winged thing when you find out!

Now that's a great story.

What is soooo cool is that I stuck with AD&D 2ndEd forever. I never bought books, read up or got involved with any "newer" versions of the game until Pathfinder.

So I am new enough with Pathfinder that I have a genuine sense of semi-bewilderment and wonder when I encounter some new (to me!) monster/spell effects. It adds so much to the game when you as a player are perplexed instead of being so familiar it is, "Oh, troll, 6HD, AC blah blah, regenerate, light a torch while we 'occupy' it…"

And while I *know* I can do research to look up the creature or the spells or whatnot to get some insight… I don't… and will not, because I don't want to ruin the sense of wonder of the story unfolding for myself.

This was actually everyone else's 2nd session, I could not make the first one due to party-prep for my wifey's Bday.

The DM allows free reign (with veto authority) in developing your PC backstory and goals, and actually has us fill out a questionnaire that will help him do up adventure hooks. The more detailed we get, the more detailed HE can get. Things like:

*2-3 paragraphs on where you are from and your position in your family tree.
*If you are not from the setting, why are you here now?
*Name three organizations in the setting you have a relationship with and explain those relationships.
*Who is your mentor and how did that develop?
*Who is your rival and why?
*Name three secrets you wish to keep hidden.
*Name three "beliefs" your PC has (true or not – but your PC is convinced.)

So, with NO PRIOR KNOWLEDGE of the other player's characters/races/classes or missions/quests…
I came up with Kaivok Jharrlym.

Born into the Highshield clan, Kaivok's kin have a generational history as deep surveyors, making initial scouting digs and using their training and talent to locate the purest and most lucrative of veins. Their family name enjoys recognition and respect among all Janderhoff dwarfs; the Jharrlym family name dominates the long list of coveted, "Vanguard Pick," titles; awarded once every hundred years to the surveying scout that has the most consistent history of locating the richest veins of metal or gems in that hundred years.

Through his own surveying and study, Kaivok has become convinced that there are recognizable geological processes at work in the mountains south of Korvosa near the Nidal border, and rich veins of mithral (and more) are yet to be found therein.

Kaivok submitted a proposition to the Janderhoff Council, requesting an expedition and sponsorship. It took two years for the Council to get around to denying the request. Conservative in the extreme, the Council claimed the reason was the proposed sites proximity to Nidal. If unwanted attention was attracted by the mining expedition, the shadowfolk of Nidal may mount an incursion that could threaten Korvosa, with whom Janderhoff enjoys excellent trade relations; it would not due to upset Korvosa and have that come back to being Janderhoff's fault, even unintentionally.

Confident in his formulas and findings, and keen to prove himself, Kaivok decided to strike out independently and stake the claim personally. Being from a family of high station, he took this plan to his elders first, who advised him that above board, they all MUST respect the Council's decision.

Though Kaivok would receive no sponsorship or public backing from the Highshield Clan to keep up appearances – clandestinely they still bestowed gifts, Korvosan contact information and helpful advise.

Kaivok documented through an official statement with the Council his intention to strike out independent of Janderhoff, absolving them of any official blowback that may occur from this endeavor, he can expect no assistance or help officially.

Kaivok headed to Korvosa, intending to raise enough capital in the city to properly finance his intentions. Using contacts given to him by his elders, Kaivok studied to meet the licensing requirements to do business in Korvosa, then cast his net wide offering his services. Focusing on above and below-ground surveying/cartography and engineering consultation.

Over the last year, Kaivok discovered the mountainous land in question is not owned by some lord or consortium on file in Korvosa, so is ripe for occupation and claim. Sporadic consultations, appointments, delays and jobs have prevented him from mounting an expedition just yet, but soon he will scout the area personally and gauge what he has heard against what he sees for himself. In the meantime, he still prods travelers for information…

Xintao, that is the beauty of Roll20. I'm 3 games (I DM 1 and play in 2) with folks that I met there. Lots of neat features as a DM, and as a player you really don't worry to much about the interface.

Check it out

Xintao… All you "really" need is a mic and headphones, a camera is not required. The monitor is the game map, tokens are your PC's and NPC's with your character sheet entered in the specific game. Pre-set and custom macros for dice rolls of ANY type.

MANY varieties of RPG games are hosted, and there is a specific search mechanism on the site to locate games that welcome new players.

roll20.net

Make a profile, set the search parameters for a game (ruleset, language, "new player") and find one that has a start-end time and date that you can fit into your schedule.

Sample youtube video of a game session – YouTube link

There are map "layers" the GM can use so that what can be viewed by one player down a hallway with their "darkvision 60ft" cannot be seen by another with darkvision 30ft.

AND – the option of using dramatic or creepy sound effects and thematic background music are a feature.
