I need to find some artwork for the cover of my Sword & Spear ancient & medieval rules. I've looked at some of the websites that sell royalty free photos and illustrations, and there are some that are OK, but nothing really inspiring. Any other suggestions as to how I can get some cheap artwork for my rules ? Anyone out there do this sort of thing on commission ?

It may be worth you photographing some of your units or figures in an interesting setting and then running the photo through a filter or two to give the impression of line drawing, watercolour or oil painting etc.

Do you have a college that offers an Art degree near by? An art student would probably do it just for their portfolio that they need to submit.

I've drawn covers and illustrations for Flagship Games in the past, see my web site:

There are some WEIRD ones that pop up if you google sword & spear!

Dont use those…;-)

Check on DeviantArt. If you're doing this more as a hobby than as a commercial venture, you may find that a student or talented amateur will be willing to trade maybe a full page in the rulebook plus a penny or two per copy to allow you to use their art. The more commercial your product is (it's work, not just a fun project), the harder that'll be. Of course, you could also offer "growth possibilities": "Stick with me, kid …" :)

Your work is great, and would be perfect for what I want, but I need to find something much cheaper.

Glengarry5 / Colin,

I tried to e-mail you via your website but it bounced back as an "invalid recipient". If you'd like to discuss a possible artwork commission please e-mail me:

Thanks

So how much do you want to spend for it?

It's a bit late now, the rules were published in June !
