28mm Lasercut Samurai Castle

Hi Guys,

I've been doing a bit of work with a laser cutter (a change from resin) and I have my first offering for your consideration: a 28mm Samurai Castle. Levels removable (as per pictures)

picture

picture

Base is ~30cm x 38cm and stands around 44cm tall.
It is a kit, which takes around 2hrs to construct…not a huge degree of skill needed…just some PVA glue! Construction video is just about ready and I'll post a link once its up.

In terms of price, after much wide surveying work (Thanks nic from eurekamin) I am going to retail it for $150 USDau. Weight is just under 2kg for those wanting an idea of shipping. (I'm in Melbourne Australia

More than interested in feedback.

Will have some in the flesh at Littlewars Melbourne next week end (Sunday June 1st) littlewars.com.au

Next project is an insignificant little farm complex from Belgium. (if you need a bigger clue it will be really useful for bicentenary games Next year)

Feel free to contact me mike.parker@tpg.com.au

I really like the fact that all levels are removable. That will be really useful for gaming with. Would it be at all possible to post a picture with a few 28mm models on tehre so we can get an idea of how it looks next to them. I know you have given the measurements but a visual for it would be great.

Arteis22 May 2014 5:54 a.m. PST

Interesting – very interesting! It looks magnificent. Stunning looks, and the design looks quite intricate and clever.

I imagine it would be easy enough to super-detail. For example, the roofs could be easily textured with corrugated card or something. And I think if I got one I'd experiment to see if I could get the stone walled base to slope slightly.

Anyway, lovely stuff!

Battlefield Accessories22 May 2014 6:02 a.m. PST

Will dig up a few more images.

The Roof is done with Corrugated card (that's part of the gluing…it is timber for the main part of the construction…heavy card for the roof base, then corrugated card cut to size to simulate tiles. The base is slopped at about 10 degrees (Bleeped text to do the geometry!)

I'll put up some more detailed pictures…scored "timber work" on all levels plus card overlays to give it "3d" feel.

That's outstanding! It would be just the thing for some SoB&H skirmishes with the WF samurai I have on the workbench (and have yet to assemble). Unfortunately for me, shipping to the US would appear to be around $50 USD-60 (AUD), based on the Australian Post website's calculator. I do wonder if it would not be feasible for creators of laser cut products to coordinate and have them burned in the destination country, emailing the CAD file(s) and the material specs, rather than shipping the object itself. It would certainly decrease the cost.

yup, that postage stings a bit. The issue I've found with the laser cutting is materials…0.2 mm difference in say the card weight throws the whole model out.

darthfozzywig22 May 2014 6:28 a.m. PST

That's really cool! Lord Yabu approves.

Unfortunately for me, shipping to the US would appear to be around $50 USD USD-60 (AUD)

Yeah, that's a killer, unfortunately.

LostPict22 May 2014 6:30 a.m. PST

Gotta have one! I sent you an email.

About $194.00 USD, give or take. I think it would still be worth it.

saltflats192922 May 2014 9:38 a.m. PST

I agree. I would buy it but the $50 USD shipping to US kills it. Maybe a flat $25 USD ship to the states?
Is the stone work on the base deeply engraved? (Will the outlines disappear if painted)

Cyrus the Great22 May 2014 11:32 a.m. PST

That with the shipping.

BelgianRay22 May 2014 12:15 p.m. PST

ARTEIS : to slope the stone walls I would look at Plasti Craft, should be a breeze to do.
Postage to Belgium is gonna be a "killer" but …. where can you find a descent Sengoku castle ? Nowhere… I'm definetely gonna buy it, one needs only 1 castle after all.

Henry Martini22 May 2014 5:22 p.m. PST

'…throws the whole model out'. Don't waste all that valuable organic matter – put it in the compost bin!

LostPict22 May 2014 6:39 p.m. PST

Can you give approximate dimensions for the gate house and donjon?

Thanks, Lost Pict

Borathan22 May 2014 6:53 p.m. PST

Seems kind of odd since most of the Japanese castles seemed to have their ramp inside the wall if I remember right.

Might also be nice to have a version without the lower stonework portion, I'd probably end up replacing it anyway though…

It still looks good, though shipping will be a pain.

AussieAndy22 May 2014 8:16 p.m. PST

We in Australia are faced with the high cost of shipping all the time. If you want something, you just have to pay it.

Beautiful work, Mike.

Arteis23 May 2014 4:19 a.m. PST

In some of the new photos, the lower stonework does seem to be angled a bit. Is it actually sloped, or is this just a trick of photography?

Or am I wrong in thinking a Japanese castle's stonework should be sloping anyway?

But I love what I'm seeing here. It looks an impressive model. With a bit of painting (eg dark wood-stained floors; and weathered stonework and roof-tiles), it'll be truly superb.

I have a son living in Melbourne, so I might have to get him to check this model out for me …

Carlos13th23 May 2014 8:42 a.m. PST

Japanese stone work should be sloped. I think people are hoping that if its not sloped they can make it sloped themselves.

I very much like the castle. Way to pricy for me at the money but I will certainly look into buying one eventually.

Battlefield Accessories23 May 2014 8:48 a.m. PST

Ok Answers:
The lower stone work slope is 8 degrees (even got the protractor out!)

The trick with the painting will be to paint the card overlays prior to attaching….you could even use a spray can!

gate house: 8cm x 14cm lowest height 5cm

Dojon: 14cm x 16.5cm same height measured on the outside…minus around 8mm for internal dimensions

Lower stone base 10cm tall.

Engraving is about 0.5-1mm deep and does not get lost with paint. (depending on how much paint of course!!)

Arteis: get your son to come to littlewars Melbourne..its on next week. littlewars.com.au

I've been having a chat with Nic from Eureka Miniatures and I think I will be able to ship via him to the USA for $45.00 AUD

hope that helps.

Lion in the Stars23 May 2014 1:44 p.m. PST

Any chance of a 15mm version? Perhaps with a bit more slope to the base?

please pardon the odd colors, but this pic shows the angle of the base of Edo Castle (the old Imperial Palace). Feel free to browse through the rest of that album, too, good number of pictures that I took at Edo Castle (and some other places).

Borathan23 May 2014 2:43 p.m. PST

Well, looks like something else I'm not going to end up getting, $195 USD is far out of my price range for things…and that's just not worth 3 months of my gaming budget.

BelgianRay23 May 2014 3:34 p.m. PST

To me it is worth it,I only need 1 castle, though I will have to slope the stone work, it's wrong.
Yes the ramp is correct on the outside, let's not forget there are mostly other external wall/ramps.

Arteis23 May 2014 4:52 p.m. PST

I'm also considering getting one, BelgianRay. After all, it is only the cost of around two of my usual units, at which I normally wouldn't bat an eyelid (well, not much, anyway!).

I'm hoping the 8 degree slope will be enough to give the right impression, though I would've liked it a bit more.

LostPict23 May 2014 8:34 p.m. PST

Thanks for the dimensions. This should be an ideal size for my lads. Looking forward to ordering one soon!

You are to be commended sir for producing such a useful model.
What would be the cost of shipping to the UK one wonders?
Cheers,

It looks like the only colors is the corrugated roofs and trim. Will you get them colored or plain? Will they be cut to size to fit the model?
Nice piece!

Battlefield Accessories25 May 2014 4:04 a.m. PST

Hi All,

Instructional video is complete
youtu.be/jn5rTmfHYDE
Its a bit rough…its my first shot at that kind of thing…so be gentle. Rational is that it is easier to give instructions in video form rather than written.

Cost to UK (& Belgium) shipping is $60 USDau

The corrugated card is black…the stills above are from my prototype. I now have a supply of black.

Everything is cut to shape.

Keep the questions coming.

Mike

Cacique Caribe25 May 2014 3:32 p.m. PST

Base should be something like a 60-70 degree slope.

If that can be done with paper, could it be done with mdf too?

poiter5026 May 2014 11:55 p.m. PST

Will it be available at Little Wars Adelaide?

Battlefield Accessories27 May 2014 4:46 a.m. PST

Yes I will have a few at little wars Adelaide.

Good, I will bring my shekels! ;-)>

stew46a01 Jun 2014 4:21 a.m. PST

Any plans for a 15mm version

BelgianRay01 Jun 2014 10:45 a.m. PST

Your video is perfect.

Curufea01 Jun 2014 7:07 p.m. PST

Nice! There's not enough lasercut work here.

Battlefield Accessories02 Jun 2014 2:37 a.m. PST

ok

the 15mm question. scaling down in principle is easy… issue comes with the interlocking pieces… each join needs to be remastered…very time consuming….that being said i'll have a look at it.

fist castle shipped out to the USA today. (I have 4 in boxes ready to roll)

if you've sent me a message and I haven't responded please send again…I'm on the organising committee for little wars Melbourne which ran yesterday, so things have been a little crazy!

Hi guys

Just to let you know that I will be at littlewars Adelaide next Saturday. Will have 3castles with me

Also for those in the USA. I have sent 3castles to historicin (they are being sold by the guy who sells eureka miniatures. I'll try and find his trading name) good opportunity to see the kit in the flesh

I am just about finished painting and building mine. It's a superb kit. Highly recommended.
