"A top Iranian naval commander said that he is prepared to order suicide attacks, drone strikes, and missile technology to "destroy the U.S. Navy" in any upcoming confrontation, according to an interview printed in Iran's state-run media.

Iranian Naval Commander Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi, a member of Iran's elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), said that Iran is constantly training and preparing for a clash with the United States, according to a recounting of his remarks provided by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI)…"

If it plays out like Millennium Challenge then, yeah, they'll destroy the USN.

Mikasa20 May 2014 3:06 a.m. PST

I'd be amazed if they destroy a single ship

Good luck with that, Iran.

You'll have a hell of a time beating Congress to the punch, though.

Didn't they promise to sail over here and harass us? Did they ever make it? I hope they didn't forget their astrolabes.

I don't know always thought Iran was an example of why you shouldn't let the clergy take over a modern nation and drag it back into the middle ages. As long as the mullahs hold onto power, we have a shining example of why there should be separation of church and state.

Is this supposed to help their negotiating stance in the current nuke disarmament talks?

LOL!

Doug Redshirt, if you happen to be at Historicon I am buying you a beer.

In the meantime I offer this Zen substitute.

Free beer. Hmmm. Not this year. Maybe next year I will make Historicon. Now back to getting my 1914 game of the opening months of the war to work. Need to have it ready for Recruits up in KC in September.

Being the commander of the Iranian navy seems like the Admiral position in the old board game "junta".

That's cute.
CIWS/ESSM does work against truck-launched C-901s or whatever they have. They realize this, right?

Iran Publicizes Their Plan On Sinking The U,.S. Navy

"The IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps), the branch of Iran's military whose role is to protect Tehran's Islamic system, has published on Twitter an interesting drawing showing how they imagine an attack on an enemy warship entering the Persian Gulf.

The plan is to use several different weapons systems in a coordinated attack, opened by high speed boats to create a diversion.

According to Good Morning Iran blog, who translated the text accompanying the rendering, the plan assumes that Iranian high speed boats, equipped with missiles and mines —and disguising themselves as normal fishing boats — would carry out an initial attack against the enemy ship…"

Not a bad strategy, except that USN ships carry radar detectors. As soon as the FACs light off their search radars (to tell the SSMs where to go), game's up.

And trying that would very quickly turn the entire world against Iran (you do NOT block the Straits of Hormuz!)

Yep … on both counts …

Mako1129 May 2014 4:40 p.m. PST

Disarm the USN crews perhaps, for a while with such boasts, since they'll be helpless, while rolling about on the deck, laughing their a##es off.

I imagine we'll stand off outside the straits, and their vessels and air force will be decimated, should it come to a real shooting war.

Lion in the Stars29 May 2014 6:02 p.m. PST

No, there'd be some serious pucker-factor when the missile-targeting radars lit off.

The joking and LMFAOPMP moments would start after the Iranian shooting phase.

I have a friend who hand a cousin that fought in the Iran/ Iraq war. He had this story. He was in a Iraqi tank and got annoyed by this heavy, loud banging on the hull. He said he opened the top to yell at whoever was screwing around with the big hammer. He then saw it was some sort of Iranian cannon firing at him from a distant battery. Apparently, they were shooting some sort of ball/ defective shell that was bouncing off the side. A repeating story?
