link Weird that they are staggering the core three books over 3 months. Considering you need at least the PH and MM to play… |

I appreciate the starter set only costing $20. USD |
BigNickR | 19 May 2014 8:08 p.m. PST |
This sounds like just about the dumbest way to stage a launch I could think of
|

It may be weird, but personally I am thankful. The advantage of a staggered launch is that I'm only spending $50 USD/month rather than $150 USD all up front (assuming no additional discounts). Damon. |

But if you can't use one of them without at least one of the others what is the point of buying it? |
Only Warlock | 19 May 2014 8:45 p.m. PST |
I just read up a bit and they claim the PH has enough to get your campaign up and running. Also the basic set will not just have prepare characters but will include character creation. |
3rd Foot and Mouth | 19 May 2014 8:52 p.m. PST |
They did he same thing with 3rd edition, there was a DMG lite section at the back of the first printing of the PHB if I recall correctly. Backfired somewhat when White Wolf released the Creature Collection before WotC got the Monster Manual out. |

I seem to remember AD&D being released in a staggered fashion back in the day as well – but that could just have been how they were sold here in NZ. |
doug redshirt | 19 May 2014 9:21 p.m. PST |
I remember them doing this before. The basic set comes out and then the books. |
Coyotepunc and Hatshepsuut | 19 May 2014 9:35 p.m. PST |
They gave me enough time to burn out on 3rd and 4th, and rebuild my 1st edition collection. I love my 1st edition, not hopeful for 5th. |
Space Monkey | 19 May 2014 9:39 p.m. PST |
1st edition had an even longer gap between books. I'm not much interested in this but I assume I'll be pulled into playing it at some point. |
Inari7 | 19 May 2014 9:40 p.m. PST |
AD&D had a year between books. |

If you want to start playing right away, buy the starter box. At only $20 USD it's not too much of a burden, and sounds like you get all the necessary rules and material to get going. Rules up to 5th level will give you plenty of time. By the time all 3 books are out, you'll probably be ready to incorporate them in the game. At a guess, playing up to 5th level will give you at least a few months of game time. Damon. |

Cleaner link here
link The starter set is a decent price. The core books at $49.95 USD per book is a bit pricey. Also the page count is a bit hefty at 320 pages per book. Lets hope that is because they've decided to be all inclusive on these and that they won't be releasing a PHB2, a MM2,3 and 4 and a DMG2. |

Amazon already has the starter up for $16 USD preorder. I assume the books will be up for $40 USD each on amazon. |

"D&D: The Gathering"
. A far cry from the original concept, in any case. Oh well. |

Looking forward to it. Pre-ordered the Starter set on Amazon. Xin |

people are already calling it D&D Previous
I'm not terribly excited given the mess 3.X was. But we shall see. |

I'm not terribly excited given the mess 3.X was. But we shall see. I thought it was modular. I thought the mantra was to be able to use the rules you wanted and skip the ones you didn't? I took that to mean that feats and skills were optional rules. Did that change or was I wrong (strong possibility on the latter)? |
Xintao | 20 May 2014 1:32 p.m. PST |
Well from the a set of playtest rules I found that someone combined into a pdf, looks like feats and skills are still optional as of the last playtest. Xin |
