"We live in interesting times
." – Old Chinese Proverb China are set to sign a lucrative gas deal with Putin that would negate the effects of western sanctions if Europe were to cut back or cease gas imports over the Ukrainian crisis: link If China and Russia further extend their cooperation to counter American and European interests, that can't be good. |

28mm you are not quoting the proverb correctly It reads "May you live in interesting times" as a semi curse wishing the person to have a trouble and danger filled life . In addition t is not even Chinese in origin but probably American link |

The last time the Chinese tried that (in 1979), it didn't work out too well for them. |

Didn't read the article, but apparently the Chinese aren't interested in the energy deal with Russia, based upon a headline I read. Of course, that could just be their opening position to obtain more favorable terms. Seems the Chinese are installing an oil rig in contested waters, and the Vietnamese are weighing response options as well. |

And the Vietnam material is obsolete. They've been getting new Su-30 fighters, P800 Anti Ship Missiles, Gepard frigates new Kilo class submarines as well as S300, Panstir and Buk M2E air defence systems. And there's a ton of stuff on order – SIGMA corvettes, more Su-30s, more Gepards and more Kilos, though these probably wouldn't be delivered or enter service for any 2014 conflict. Army has been neglected as emphasis is on naval and air power. But if the air defence systems can stymie Chinese air superiority and the naval defences hinder PLAN operations, then the ground forces are in with a chance as they're defending home territory. Also bare in mind PLA still has large numbers of units equipped with obsolete material. It's anyone's guess as to what level quality units the Chinese would actually deploy in such a conflict.
Would they be 1st tier units or whether these would be kept in reserve for potential use against Japan or Taiwan? |

Ooops – correction, apparently they did reach an oil deal. China just rammed a Vietnamese fishing vessel, which sank, a few days ago, since apparently it was venturing too close to one of China's controversial oil rigs in disputed waters. Haven't heard much else since then, but imagine there will be more to this story, soon. |
