Does anyone know of anyone UK based that sells refurbished or second-hand Laboratory Vortex mixers? They are two-a-penny on U.S. Ebay but not so in the UK.

As a lab manager in the UK, I think the reason you don't see refurbished/2nd-hand vortex mixers on Ebay here is that when a lab does get rid of one it is usually so knackered that it would cost as much to refurbish as to buy a new one.

Hmm. I think you maybe right Tamsin. As a matter of interest, is their a particular brand you can recommend?

It's been a long while since I actually bought one for a lab. They are all much of a muchness. The main one we used to buy when I was still in the lab (I'm mainly office based these days) was the Vortex Genie 2 from Scientific Industries, but you can get very similar models from a number of manufactuers. I think IKA and Stuart Scientific are popular brands, and some of the larger lab supply companies will have "own brand" ones.

The list price for new ones is £2.00 GBP-300 (exc VAT) or thereabouts. However, if you know someone in a university or NHS lab who can buy it for you, the chances are they will be able to do so at a hefty discount.

It is something like that indeed. The price ranges, in the UK at least, are enormous, and second hand ones are very difficult to come by. I guess I'll just have to fork out for a new one. The cheapest I've found is about £90.00 GBP link
