Hurlbar has launched a Kiki campaign to fund a modular gladiatorial arena in 28 mm. The campaign is well funded and several bonuses have been unblocked. These bonuses are also interesting as of the emperor's box which is not yet unblocked. The smallest arena costs £ 60. You may have checkered floors, hexagona, etc.

I don't do crowdfunding, but that should be a cool product when (if) it becomes generally available.

A friend posted this on Facebook the other day. It looks GREAT, but out of my price range…

It would be ideal if they did a version with the arena floor, and the inside walls that surround the floor. As nice as the seating area and little buildings look, they wouldn't add anything to our Gladiator games in the least, so I don't see any point in buying them.

The pricing for the arena is not bad but the shipping kills it for me.

elsyrsyn16 May 2014 1:41 p.m. PST

It's laser cut wood, right? Maybe they should look into licensing the files to other producers to eliminate international shipping.

This is a great KickStarter – the complete arenas look great and should add atmosphere to the games.

The floors are really cheep from £6.00 GBP unpainted to £18.00 GBP for the largest fully painted and varnished. These come in a variety of formats, including ones specifically for Jugula and Red Sand Blue Sky, as well as generic hexes (in two sizes).

Though gladiatorial games systems may normally constrain you to the area, it would be easy to expand them to cover fighting on the terraces; or you could use a RPG system for complete freedom of movement.

@Tango1 – Thanks for sharing our project :)

@elsyrsyn – The arena kits will be available from our website once all the backer rewards have been sent out in August.

@Stosstupoen – We've kept the shipping down to the lowest we can but this is just a very large model. So far we have a retailer in Switzerland who has pledged and hopefully we'll get more who can then offer cheaper shipping in their region.

@Mr Canuck – Thanks for the suggestion, we'll look at adding that as another option. Now that we've started to unlock more detailed designs for wooden and stone walls, this could still be an attractive option for anyone not wanting a full set of buildings. It would keep the shipping cost down too.

Hurlbat (the creator) have now released pictures of the redesigned wood terrace sections. They look really good. The stone sections, for example, getting many variants and a torch bracket added. Redesign of the stone terraces, entrance way, holding cells and editor boxes have all been unlocked via stretch-goals so they will be getting the same treatment. Pictures of some of the new stuff are promised soon. If you looked at it before, it would be worth looking at it again to see the increase in quality.

It ends in a week's time.

I am in for the 12 piece arena. Very nice. Only need to decide what other goodies I need plus whether to go with frontier wood or capital stone…. ;-)

I am definitely going for stone. I really like what they've done with those arena inner walls (on Wooden Terrace II). The back wall on the stone curved terraces is in three sections so it produces more of a circle (rather than octogon) effect. Plus the stone terraces align better, IMO, with the other modules. A no-brainer for me, but YMMV :-)

Here is the redesigned holding cell piece, with both a wooden arena frontage and all stone version.

Some of the pieces – the editor's box and the entrance – don't seem in scale with the rest.

Sablefox23 May 2014 8:17 a.m. PST

I understand that some of the pieces illustrated are very much prototypes (this is after all a KickStarter): in particular the editor's box and entrance. I believe there will be photos of more of the reworked modules, with sample miniature figures and unit dimensions published over the weekend.

I suspect that the entrance module will be reworked in its final form. I know they've already commented on the fact that the columns will be improved.

As will all games scenery/accessories there are compromises with size and scale. The creators are trying to incorporate features found in all sorts of arenas in to one small structure (which would be smaller than real life ones). As far as I am concerned I will be happy if they work with figures in the 28-35mm range and aesthetically fit well together. From what I've seen so far I think it will be a very tabletop model to add flavour/atmosphere to a gladiatorial game.

Having said that I am not sure about the editor's box myself; but it is not something I am planning on including anyway.

I think this is a great kickstarter, especially since you can see the design work almost done and they already have the equipment to make everything, there should not be a long wait time or delays in receipt of rewards.

Looking forward to seeing these on some gaming tables, I'm thinking some Freeblades figs will look cool in here :-)

Sablefox24 May 2014 3:38 p.m. PST

Yes, I believe that this appears to be one of the safest bets for on time delivery amongst the KickStarters I've backed.

Sablefox25 May 2014 10:34 a.m. PST

The latest design updates are now published, for the grand entrance, editors box, stone terrace, and wooden terrace with stone frontage. So the line up is now:-

More updates are expected this evening and tomorrow.

Sablefox25 May 2014 5:00 p.m. PST

For those for whom "Less is More", new façade reward levels have been introduced. These consist of the arena floor and the wall / frontage / façade that goes around it. These façade kits are double the cost of the arena floor alone. So if you have a floor only pledge, double it to include a façade pledge; and if you haven't pledge because you can't afford a full arena, you can now pledge for a façade reward at between one-fifth and one-third the price

Go on, you know you want to do it ;-) link

More photos of the modules will be released tomorrow.

The project has also released a lot of new stretch goals, including straight-section modules of entrances, holding cell and editor's box; terraces with holding cells, and double-sized curved modules with central entrances.

Come on, join the fun, pledge for your chosen reward, and help unlock the stretch goals:- link :-)

charles popp26 May 2014 5:43 p.m. PST

God,I want this. This is just what I was looking for.Was going to talk to a carpenter and see if he could make me a custom one.

LostPict26 May 2014 6:54 p.m. PST

This kickstarter has really come together nicely. I am in for the big stone arena and a façade only wooden one. I think that I can use the wooden walls for work in progress areas on the stone arena. Very nice. Just wish it had a few more days to hit even more stretch goals.

Sablefox27 May 2014 2:42 a.m. PST

And here is a link to a better picture of a Roman Arena you can build (being modular there are lots of combinations of elements to form circular or oval designs).

Tango0127 May 2014 12:44 p.m. PST

Great model!.
Congrats!.

This KickStarter is now in the final 48hrs of funding.

The Emperor's box (which could double as a straight side entrance) stretch goal is close to being funded.

Sablefox28 May 2014 5:15 a.m. PST

The Emperor box has been unlocked. Next major stretch goal is straight and curved stone terrace with holding cell modules.

Sablefox28 May 2014 3:05 p.m. PST

The terrace holding cells are now unlocked; and the next stretch goal is the straight editor's box, and pairs of 1/2 width straight terraces in wood and stone.

Sablefox29 May 2014 10:36 a.m. PST

Just over 2hrs to go, with all stretch-goals unlocked.

manchesterreg14 Aug 2016 2:52 a.m. PST

Ive tried contacting Hurlbat, without any reply are they still making this arena?

smallsoldier18 Oct 2019 7:29 p.m. PST

I too would like to know where I can get one of these

Asteroid X18 Oct 2019 8:07 p.m. PST

While it looks nice, it also looks hard to reach down into and possibly not very game friendly because of that.

There is the Playmobil one that various people have shown on here to look very good and lower sides to allow easy reach and probably a much larger play area for more maneuvering and options for mounted and chariots.
