Last week we played a game with some rules I've been working on – Tales of Action and Adventure. They are designed for skirmish games of 10 – 20 figures per side, covering the period 1600 – 1900.
We played a prisoner escort scenario. The British Army Redcoats were tasked with delivering a prisoner who had arrived by boat to a safehouse. They were ambushed by a Gypsy street gang, who wanted to capture the prisoner themselves and hold him for ransom.
The first picture shows the opening positions. The Redcoats are in two groups – one group is with the prisoner at the bottom of the photo, where they have been dropped off by boat amidst the dockside buildings. The other three Redcoats are in the safehouse, which is the large building at the top of the photo.
The Gypsies need to split up so that they can engage the redcoats whichever way they choose to go, so they deploy in four groups. Two groups are in the park.
One group hides in the alley between two residential houses.
And the last group is behind a gate in a walled area of wasteland.
The redcoats, led by their Captain and a non-army marksman character with their prisoner.
The gypsies leave their hiding places and begin to converge on the redcoats.
The redcoats move rather hesitantly away from the river
..
.allowing the Gypsies to close in on them.
Gypsies move through the dock building to outflank the redcoats
.
.and then drop back when approached.
Gypsies closing in on the other side. The redcoats made the mistake of not making a run for it accross the park towards the safehouse. The allowed the Gyspies to close in from all sides and bring their strength in numbers to bear.
The last group of Gypsies emerges from the alleyway to add to the numbers.
One Gypsy is down, stunned, but six are left on the right to threaten the lone redcoat taking cover behind the packing crates.
The captain of the redcoats takes his men behind the dock buildings and fierce hand-to-hand combat ensues.
Gypsies from the alley close in.
There are still three redcoats in the safehouse at the top of the photo They have taken a few long shots at the Gypsies but to no effect. Now they have no targets in range.
The redcoats are cornered.
The lone shooter takes out another Gypsy but two more are closing in.
There are casualties on both sides in the melee. The prisoner is left unattended and makes a run for it.
One of the previously stunned Gypsies recovers and takes control of the prisoner.
With the prisoner lost to the Gypsy gang it is over, but the remaining redcoats go down fighting.
