Inspired by Crowley's "Empires of the Sea" I'm interested in doing a Ottoman pirates vs Templars/Spanish skirmish game based on the raids of the time.

The Old Glory 25mm seem good (with unarmoured swords/aquebus arabs that would work as Ottoman pirates) but their 30-man lots are too big. (I.e. I don't want to have to buy 150 models just to get decent variety in my 30-man skirmish force)

TAG Ottomans sell in smaller lots but their Turks look too modern with their muskets looking more 1800s than 1500s.

I presume most "Conquistador" models would work as Spainish/Templars so they'd be easier to source.

Any suggestions for models or ranges?

(I'm thinking 28mm, but I'd even consider 15mm if they were "good" 15s)

You might consider the excellent Foundry El Dorado and Swashbucklers line.

Splitting hairs alas.. I think you will find that the Templars disappeared more or less in the early 14th century (save in Portugal when they lived on until the 18th)

Redoubt has some good Ottomans and also Ottoman pirates, though they are about "heroic 30mm" in scale, larger than any of my GW or Front Rank figures, which are themselves the biggest of the "heroic 28mm" lines.

Have a look at this list. Ranges listed as 16th Century, Ottomans, and Pirates are the ones you need to check for suitable figures…..

"Brother Vinni" has some nice Arabs and Spanish in his 28mm/Renaissance ranks: brother-vinni.com/shop.htm

Arsenal Miniatures has some splendid Spanish – they were bought by Warlord Games for later release, so they will show up sooner or later (hopefuller sooner, but probably later): arsenalminiatures.blogspot.de

Eureka also has a "Portugese colonial" range – beside their Pirates and Conquistators – that you can loot for individual miniatures. Usually the conquistators are not really fitting with the later century Spanish military fashion, but the differences are often subtle and as neglectible as the difference between a M16 and a BAR.

Here is a link to the Redoubt Moorish marines (pirates), they are nice figs although more 'heroic' 28mm, there is a nice variety including crossbows. If you are interested I have about 40 of them for sale!

link for another listing of renaissance 28mm manufacturers, or link for listings of all 15mm ones.

There are an awful lot of people selling Pirates out there … for some reason !

Arsenal are very nice, thanks for the link. Is that yet another Paul Hicks project? At this point I'm pretty sure he's got my vote for best sculptor in the business.
