defensive fire does not happen until after movement, So if for example, 1 union brigade assaults 1 confederate brigade, and the confederates succeed in defensive fire and score a "Target recoils 2 base depths" result, can the union brigade now not assault ? |

The way I read it, if the Union brigade makes contact with the Confederate brigade during its movement then the units are in close combat and thus the Confederate unit does not get defensive fire. Remember, ranged infantry shooting represents skirmish fire and not a sustained firefight. Close combat, however, represents a firefight within 100 yards or an assault. Only artillery fire may interrupt a moving unit before it makes contact. If the artillery fire pushes back the target, then it doesn't move to contact. But if the artillery fire is ineffective then the target may advance to contact if it has the movement. |

Ok that makes sense, Im just having trouble understanding why anyone would ever choose to fire and not charge? If you chose to fire and the defensive fire then results in you retreating 2 base depths are you now out of range to fire at all? if fire range is only 2 inches, when would you ever do it as infantry? |

On page 13, the rules state that brigades "cannot fire into a close combat." The various errata posted on TMP and the Iron Ivan discussion pages by the author make it clear this includes brigades firing at their close combat opponent. Brigades in close combat do not fire, and are not fired on. Remember that close combat in these rules includes shooting. So the rules are trying to prevent a brigade from firing twice. |

You raise a good tactical question--why would units choose to stop and fire instead of just charging in? The answer is: You wouldn't. Desultory skirmish fire isn't going to resolve much of anything, so it's absolutely the goal to close into combat as quickly as possible. That close combat is what would represent a sharp firefight under 100 yards. |
