I am looking for sources for 28mm riderless horses in Old West scenes. I've ordered a pack of the Artizan horses – these are fully kitted out, so they'll do for horses tied to hitching rails. But that's only one version and I would like variations. More, I'd like some which are either much more lightly tacked up (just a halter maybe) or without tack entirely – as wild mustangs or horses in corrals and the like. I thought these would be fairly easy to find – after all a naked horse is the same at any point in history – but I am struggling. Any suggestions? I'm in the UK. |

Dixon Miniatures make a variety of horses, some with saddles, some with blankets, IIRC some with no tack at all. Check Ebob and Black Scorpion too

The best place to go would be Wargames Factory. They have sprues of plastic horses with no tack at all. I have a bunch of them that I'm going to make into pack horses. |

Black Scorpion sells a pack of riderless, bare horses as part of the Tombstone range. |

Knuckleduster has a pack of three hitched horses. Very cool they are too. |

These companies are not in the UK, but both have been fine to mail stuff to me in the UK. Aspen Modelling Company's S scale horses are nice sculpts and I use them with my 25mm and 28mm minis. link Eureka Miniatures also does some nice bare horses. link Size comparison of Aspen, Ebob, Eureka etc: link |

Thanks for all these suggestions – I have ordered from Black Scorpion and Knuckleduster (via their UK dealer). Aspen look very nice but I'm a bit nervous about the scale – they seem a bit slight for 28mm. I might have ordered from Dixon but their website doesn't have pictures of the models I am interested in – sorry Dixon, no picture no buy. Great site by the way, Stronty Girl, especially the size comparisons, but also nice paint work. |

Not to beat a dead horse (badum
ching!) but if you ever find yourself wanting more "saddled" horses, I simply picked up a pack of Perry Civil War cavalry
the horses are brilliant and can be assembled in several ways. I used these for horses around town --- also even converted some cowboys on some of them. All in all, an excellent investment. The sprues also include some arms with six guns, and some freely cast carbines for tossing on a store counter etc. Really quite a surprisingly useful box.
