I was at Barnes and Nobles today and found a Gundum model I wanted to see if it could work for 15mm gaming
It was part of the Gundam Converge sets. Cost $5 USD where I got it.

It didn't have a base so I added one.

I did break the antenna off the top within a few miniatures of handling it. It is a rubbery material but it took to a spray of Krylon spray-paint just fine After painting the torso I painted the arms separately. They are simple plugs and pull off easily. The gun armed hand is the same way.

I just added a dab of E6000 to all the joints and left it to dry a bit.

Seeing as it had a single cycloptic eye, I wanted to tie it in with my GZG drones and Robots. So, I painted it the same red eye and added rolls of camo netting to the top of it.

Its now night time so no natural light to show it off well but here is the best pic of the night of it.

I think it works pretty well. In the morning I will give it a coat of matte varnish and take a better pic of it.

Thanks for looking.

To start with I thought you must be mad but once painted it looks perfect. Well done.

Redroom10 May 2014 7:23 p.m. PST

fits in well after you painted it, nice find

Richard Gaulding10 May 2014 7:28 p.m. PST

You know, it wouldn't look too bad (or out of proportion) with a head swap for something more, you know, 15mm scaled. Just saw the big head off (and use it for, I dunno, a hover drone perhaps?) and add a different one.

Zeelow10 May 2014 7:56 p.m. PST

Great modeling! Fine looking Mech.

Grimmnar10 May 2014 8:37 p.m. PST

DZT – Looks damn good.
K. of St. John – I was thinking the same thing.
Redroom – Does indeed fit in well with that line of models.
Rich Gaud – Got a head in question?
I can see the need for a new head. BUT if you put a smaller head on then the question turns into is it a piloted mech or a robot? With the head on it now the head is where the pilot sits. One cant fit in the chest. Turn it into a robot then the problem is solved.
Looks good either way though. :-)
Like to mention that a few others in the provided link look mighty good for recruitment as well. If you haven't looked yet i suggest ya do.

Idea stolen! Great paint job and excellent discovery. The large head makes a good "cockpit" for the operator at 15mm scale.

Wow, the wonderful magic of repainting and a little detailing.

This reminds me a lot of what a Manga artist by the name of Kondo did with Gundam. He piled stowage and camo netting on them, gave them camo paint schemes and made them look dirty and used.

Hi Dzt – very nice, the trick to anything like this is having the imagination to picture it as what you want, kind of like the sculptor picturing the piece in the slab of marble, and you have picked a winner, as far as changing the head, I don't think it needs it, however if you did want to go that rout I would say, leave the head, that becomes the body, and add a smaller head to the top, where the antenna is, maybe use a drone as the head, then you tie them all together nicely.

AVAMANGO10 May 2014 11:52 p.m. PST

I also thought it looked a bit comical at first but as already stated once painted it looks very exceptable, i quite like the big head as it simply different and pretty original and who to say it's not piloted or driven much like a tank with a small crew, however i would try to remove the base of the antenna. :)zac

Thanks for all the compliments and suggestions!

Here are the better pics as promised. I am not a camouflage guy in general. Most of my attempts have been failures. With that in mind I had the animated starwars series on in the background when I started painting and the older storm troopers were calling the new recruits "Shiny" as their armor was still new and pristine looking. So rather than try and fight something I would struggle to do, and still have it look bad, I simply used a limited palette of colors and mottled the mech.

I could see the men taking pride in its wear and tear. Sort of a "Trust the old Girl, They don't make 'em like they used too" mentality.

I don't think I will convert it or the head area. I picked this out of the group of options as it had the least head like area to begin with. The rear shot shows where I envision the entry hatch to be.

I'm happy about it as it is, I'd love to see other people get some and see how they will convert them. It's slated to see battle this coming weekend in a game of Gruntz.

That's one of the newer Gundam Converge figures. I have some myself. They work great with 15mm and normally only cost around $8 USD but have been going on Ebay for more.

I mentioned them sometime last year.
I didn't want to convert the one I had, I like the Crossbone Gundam X-1 and X-2 as is.

Twoball Cane11 May 2014 9:38 a.m. PST

Wicked nice….. I love the camo netting…..gonna steal that idea

Dropzonetoe Fezian11 May 2014 10:44 a.m. PST

Sargonarhes,

Did you repaint them or anything?

Good. Very good.

Sorry, which model is that?

It is called – Asshimar.

Stealth100011 May 2014 11:32 a.m. PST

Looks spot o with the Gota troops. Great find. And lovely work.

Ahh thanks.

Sargonarhes11 May 2014 2:13 p.m. PST

Repaint the Crossbone Gundam X-2? Are you kidding? I love Zabine Chareux's blackish blue Gundam with the skull and crossbone logo on the head. Why would I want to mess with this?

I'm just looking for more Gundam Converge figures as I still want some Gelgoogs and Zaku's, needs grunt mobile suits.

Grimmnar11 May 2014 10:27 p.m. PST

Still say the head is great as is for a 15mm pilot to sit in. But i was thinking today for those who may think it is still too big. Take the head off and cut say a third of it out of the middle. Then take the front and back piece and glue them together. Then the head wont be so deep.
Still like this model as well as most in the series. Might have to hit B&N tomorrow to see what is what. :-)

Gunner Dunbar11 May 2014 10:49 p.m. PST

Oh Ok, its the little cartoony Gundams, get it now, I can see why you steered clear of the ones with the heads, they are to big, although, looking at the one in the previous comment, you could remove the big head and put something smaller in place, and they would work OK, might look into getting a couple.

Wolfprophet12 May 2014 4:51 a.m. PST

That's a great looking repaint.

Cyclopeus12 May 2014 5:56 a.m. PST

Great job, that looks awesome.

ordinarybass13 May 2014 1:23 p.m. PST

Wow, I've got to start giving Gudams a closer look. I've always thought they were a bit too Gundam'y, but yours looks great with a paintjob to match.

Nice Work!

Dropzonetoe Fezian16 May 2014 4:44 p.m. PST

Thanks!

I'll give you that the skull and crossbones are nice but I'd still cut that head off :)

Sargonarhes17 May 2014 10:25 a.m. PST

If you still think the head is too big, watch the anime series Gargantia. The mecha's head was huge only because the cockpit was located there and could serve as an escape pod.

picture

Of course your other ideal Gundam Converge figure would be the Z'gok, if you can find one.

Dropzonetoe Fezian17 May 2014 11:53 a.m. PST

I like the bottom one a lot… shame they didn't have one when I was there or I definitely would have picked that one up.

Grimmnar18 May 2014 11:23 p.m. PST

Hey Sargonarhes and DZT.
You all give me a holler over at my handle on AOL when you get a chance eh?
