Damn! Sucks, even in 10mm!

Decals? With the shield boss in the middle, I figure it will take lots of decal solvent, and lots a cursing?

What do most of you do?

Ive tried decals and hated all the cutting. Now I just hand paint them. They look decent up close and pretty good 3+ feet away.

Smokey Roan09 May 2014 6:11 p.m. PST

Or 1 foot away! I think I am getting old! :( I use a magnifying headset to paint now, and the figures look great until I put the magnifier on them, and them I'm horrified.

Is this why old people resort to 40mm? :O

I have plenty of blank decal paper, theoretically, I could print my own decals.

Put they will be a nightmare at that scale with the shield bosses and cutting. I need an ultrafine paint pen with yellow, and none of the available paint pens are even CLOSE to being suitable for 10mm shields. :(

I hear you on painting after 40! I have a pair of cheap Dollar store reading glasses I use for painting now. And reading, but that is much more recent.

I use a backlit magnifying glass on a scissors arm assembly for painting. After I turned 40 my eyes started to lose the ability to focus in close. I have 20/20 vision for everything outside of 12" from my face. It's what happened to everyone at some point. I tried using reading glasses (I do use them for reading!) but found the magnifying lens to be much more practical.

It's similar to this:

Paint the shields white then use a red or black fine tip sharpie. Easy peasy. Any light shade will work with this method. Unless you have poor eye-hand co-ordination then it is time to break down and buy some decals.

They are very easy to use, and have the hole in the middle already cut out. Waterslide, like when we were kids.

Shield patterns on 10mm figures? You are a brave man.

I painted shield patterns for 15's which can be seen at the Fanaticus Forum and found the following technique useful.

You did not state which Roman era (Early Imperial), but I would make some slight differences in "red" for each legion; red, brick red, red orange, etc.

Forego the thunderbolts and paint the "wings" as these would cover more shield. Secondly, the wings could be of a colour other than yellow; white, ochre, or tan.

To bring contrast between the shield and wings, I would suggest painting a background for the wings first (thin dark brown or dark grey) followed by the wings. This will help to outline the wings.

A shield boss will complete the job.

Cheers,

Transfers; cut the boss out with a sharp knife. I believe LBMS do them in 10mm. They are going to look far better than anything one could paint…

Thanks, guys.

Question; Do those Vici decals accept decal solvent?

Personal logo oldbob Supporting Member of TMP10 May 2014 8:09 a.m. PST

I've used both "VVV" and "LBMS". Myself for 15mm and larger scales "LBMS" very workable and looks fantastic. "VVV" works well with all scales, especially good with 10 and 6mm figures. That's just my opinion."Bashytubites" method also works, but you need a steady hand and a real good Pen. I wonder what "Doug" has to say on this subject?

Smokeyroan,
We have a batch of decals for our 10mm's that work with no problem, biggest pain is triming them to size but its tedious rather than difficult.

Good stuff, guys. Leon, do those decals have the red, or are they clear with the yellow designs.

In other words, are they clear decals I can just lay on a already painted red shield?

LeonAdler Sponsoring Member of TMP10 May 2014 2:17 p.m. PST

Smokeyroan,
You'd need to paint the shields white (gloss) as the transfers are clear where there is white, so the white is formed from the shield colour. There are instructions for the transfers via the GAULS page. Just amended the PDF version to allow for Roman shields as the original was written before I released those.

Veni Vedi Vici transfers – as easy as pie.
1. Paint base colour and boss, when dry, gloss varnish.
2. Wait 24 hours, then apply decals.
3. Wait a further 24 hours, apply matt varnish.
Tedious but worth the result, should eliminate all signs of carrier film. Works in all scales.

VVV were great for going straight over red painted sheilds.

In a lot of cases I put two on as one did not look good, could have been the batch I had. Works fine even if you get slightly off with the second, creates a shadow.

If I were to redo the army I might be tempted to go LBMS though.
