"Last night during 24: Die Another Day Fox premiered the first trailer for Gotham, the new show (officially ordered to series yesterday) that focuses on the early career of James Gordon, the man who'll one day become commissioner of Gotham City and Batman's trusted confidant in the ongoing fight against evil.

Southland‘s Ben McKenzie takes the role of Gordon in the series, with Terriers veteran Donal Logue playing fellow cop Harvey Bullock. As you can see from the trailer, the series will feature younger incarnations of familiar Batman villains—including Catwoman, the Riddler, and the Penguin—as well as a particularly young Bruce Wayne, as played by Touch‘s David Mazouz…"

That does look pretty good!

evilcartoonist07 May 2014 5:43 p.m. PST

Looks great! I'll give it a try.
Too bad it's on Fox, though: If it's a bad show, oh well, but if it's a good show, it's going to get cancelled.

nazrat07 May 2014 5:46 p.m. PST

Too true.

Mithmee07 May 2014 6:25 p.m. PST

City is not Dark enough though.

I wonder if a young Clark Kent will appear at sometime.

Plus they did not show who would become the Joker.

Will have to check it out.

I never understood why the Wayne's would be walking home after the theater when they were filthy rich. I would think they would jump right into their limo and be driven home by Alfred.

Also I am confused on this "Gotham" timeline. Gordon has always been older than Bruce Wayne, so that is fine. But it appears that Riddler, Penguin, Catwoman characters are same age as Gordon in this series, which would make them much older than Bruce Wayne.

Hmmm.

I never understood why the Wayne's would be walking home after the theater when they were filthy rich. I would think they would jump right into their limo and be driven home by Alfred.

Just because one is wealthy doesn't mean one doesn't enjoy a pleasant evening stroll. There are plenty of wealthy people in Manhattan who are quite happy to walk a few blocks after a show, simply to enjoy the night air. Plus, the Waynes have for decades been depicted as somewhat unusual for their class, as being largely not class conscious; for example, Alfred is more of an adopted uncle and treasured family confidant and friend than an employee. So while they might enjoy the convenience of a limo on a night out, they're not in it to be seen arriving or departing in a limo; they're not interested in being celebrities. Another point in this is that technically, Alfred is the butler; yet he also serves several other staff roles which most butlers don't do— being the chauffeur, occasional gardening, apparently even cooking. We can be confident from the comics that the Waynes aren't cheap— so if they only have the one permanent servant, it must be because they don't see a superfluity of servants as necessary. So again, they may be wealthy, but they're not snobs.

… it appears that the Riddler, Penguin, Catwoman characters are the same age as Gordon

That's not what I saw. The Penguin and the Riddler appeared to be young men (early twenties, maybe?), which really isn't out of line for what amounts to about a decade while Bruce grows up. Oswald Cobblepot has always been older than Wayne, and the age of The Riddler isn't that consequential; a 30-something Riddler is fine against a 20-something Batman, as the character is about cleverness, not brawn. But on Catwoman I think you are mistaken. Catwoman and Poison Ivy are quite clearly shown to be children. That's Catwoman as a girl peering up through the bushes, apparently at the young Bruce, and Ivy as a girl of about the same age meeting Gordon in another quick cut. There is an older woman in the clips, but whoever she is, she is neither of these characters.

I'm mixed on this series. A Batman series without Batman seems kind of pointless; might as well call it "Law and Order: Gotham." The central element of the tights-and-cape hero genre is the tights-and-cape hero, after all! Without that, it seems to me you've just got another cop show. But the clips look good in a LA Confidential way, and I'm a sucker for a good hard-boiled detective tale. We'll see.

Yes, I thought Ivy was very young looking, about the same age as the young Bruce, but Catwoman looked older to me, maybe just my bad eyesight. Riddler and Penguin would be at least 10 years older it looks like.

I agree about not having the actual Batman character in place. But I will give it a chance and hope for the best. The trailer looked good overall.

Well, girls do mature faster than boys, especially at ages 11-13. Girls may even be briefly taller than boys who later out distance them in height. (Not that I'm anything close to tall, but I do recall certain girls being taller than me at that age whom I later matched or exceeded.)

Catwoman

Catwoman is the young teenage girl.
