Following our little Cold War bash at the weekend the Mat O War went back a couple of hundred years as we had a quick try out in preparation for the game we are putting on at Fisticuffs, Weymouth 31 May 14. the Austrians comprised of Nordmanns Vanguard, Bellegardes 1st Corps, Hesse Homburgs Cavalry Div and elements of Lichtensteins Grenadier Corps. Arrayed against them were Oudinots 2nd Corps with Nansouty's 1st Heavy Cavalry Division.

The Austrians deployed along the hill with their light Cavalry on the right and Heavy Cavalry right. The French deployed all of their cavalry on their left :

The French launched a large cavalry attack on the Austrian right, and after a brief scuffle routed all 3 large Hussar Regts:

The entire French Cavalry were then in a position to dominate the left flank prevent the Austrian Infantry from coming down the hill which meant the French could concentrate on the Austrian centre:

On the French right the Austrian Heavy Cavalry eventually came off the hill, however the French managed to form square with no Austrian Infantry close enough to pose a threat:

In the end poor command dice prevented an all out assault by the French and it was down to the Portuguese Legion at attack a large Austrian Regt that was shaken after a few rounds of Arty fire. Poor Austrian break test dice meant that the unit dispersed as did the supporting unit to its right opening a large hole in the Austrian centre.

Only our 5th game and the largest yet everything seemed to work well using various rule adjustments from the Albion book and the Contemptible wargames site. Looking forwards to Weymouth with even more little chaps!!

Great looking game – wargaming in the Grand Manner indeed! All the best for Fisticuffs, a great show, and this should get some attention there! Back in 2006 our raggle taggle group of soldiers and sailors from all over, so no chance to rehearse, got 'best in show' for a 25mm Quatre Bras game there but not a patch on this scale!

Sooo Jealous!

Bonsoir,

That is a good-looking game!

You can't beat loads of decent figures on good terrain.

Particularly like the marvelous windmill!

Did you make it yourself?

Cheers,

Paul

Great looking game. Don't personally like the Black Powder rules as they are too general for my Napoleonics but they certainly give brilliant looking games.

Thanks for sharing

Paul,

the windmill is commercial, think it is Ian weekley.

Craig,

spent ages looking for amendments etc, the 100 days book and the contemptible wargames site have plenty of stuff to use for a more Napoleonic feel,

Tally Ho!
