60 years ago the French Union base at Dien Bien Phu fell, effectively ending French colonial rule in South East Asia.

A much closer fight than most people know, it could have gone either way with communist deserters entering the fort still only a week or so before it was taken.

At one stage, Viet Minh casualties were so high there was near-mutiny right before an important assault on one of the strongpoints. Giap settled things old-communist style; by either shooting or threatening to shoot batches of his own troops, so it was a nearer run thing.

What is the biggest DBP wargame you know of?

Incredibly tough fight.

That is a great looking board.

If it had not fell then, the Vietnamese would have come back, and back, until they won. They never ever give up. I know, my wife is Vietnamese.

I celebrated by finally ordering some Red Star miniatures and starting a thread on the TooFatLardies Forum that will hopefully lead to a version of Chain of Command to play French Indo-China.

Been dreaming about it for years, now both rules and figures are available, time to get going!

Not just the communist style – the French did the same thing in the First World War.

GREAT looking board !! And the study of the French in Indo-China is very interesting …

My figures arrived yesterday. They are even nicer in real life, pictures do not do them justice. Anyone considering buying them, do so!

Captain dEwell14 May 2014 4:23 p.m. PST

I absolutely agree with you, Thomas Nissvik. I purchased similar figures at Salute 2014 and concur that they are even nicer in real life.

Hats off to that man Paul Hicks, again.

Already did! They are outstanding.

And I just finished painting my first batch, five Viet Minh.

Best painting fun I've had in ages.

Looks real nice. I would be so proud to achieve that level of quality painting. It also shows off those magnificent Paul Hicks sculpts. Well done.

Thank you, Captain. Now on to the French Paras. Three-tone camouflage, won't that be a challenge!

"communist deserters entering the fort still only a week or so before it was taken" an epic fail as modern youth would say!!

I could never work out why the French were so keen to hang onto this colony after they'd been kicked out by the Japanese -what did they get from it (apart from all this grief).
