TA-DA! Finally got my latest book "self-published"! You can find it (and order it) here:
createspace.com/4745476

It will also soon be available on Kindle.

I'd be happy to answer questions about it and discuss it ad infinitum.

Maps, btw, are by George Skoch.

Who asked this joker06 May 2014 10:50 a.m. PST

When does the Kindle version come out?

Congrats, Don! Looks like a good read.

When I get back home I will get the Kindle. No more space for hard copy books.

Inkbiz07 May 2014 8:18 p.m. PST

Just purchased and downloaded a copy to my iBooks, looking forward to reading it, Don, and congrats on completing it.

Best,
Bob

The short bio on the link made me smile.
You are clearly a writer of style.

Is there a TMP policy on promoting our books? I tried it out on the medieval page the other day but the post disappeared soon afterwards.

donlowry13 May 2014 9:36 a.m. PST

If there is, it's news to me.

uglyfatbloke13 May 2014 10:40 a.m. PST

Maybe I'll give it another shot, but I don't want to put anyone's backs up.

Cleburne186313 May 2014 12:41 p.m. PST

I believe if you are going to promote anything for sale outside the Marketplace you are supposed to be a Supporting Member. Personally, it doesn't bother me either way, but IIRC, that is the policy.

uglyfatbloke14 May 2014 12:09 p.m. PST

It seems like a perfectly reasonable policy and it had n't occurred to me, so I'll go have a wrestle with paypal/whatever.

donlowry18 May 2014 9:26 a.m. PST

I'm surprised that no one wants to ask about the process of self-publishing.

Inkbiz18 May 2014 1:34 p.m. PST

I'll bite…always assumed Lulu or some similar site, but I'm very curious to learn how you were able to post on Amazon..

Thoroughly enjoying the book so far, very readable and the maps are lovely as well.

Cheers,
Bob

It's posted on Amazon because I published through them. They call their service CreateSpace. If you search at Amazon, you'll find that. That's also why it's available on Kindle. They also have a deal where, if you buy the paper book (thru them, including that CreateSpace link I gave) you can then get the Kindle version at a sizable discount.

How does it look on Kindle? (I don't Kindle, personally.) I mean the typeface, margins, etc.? I was warned that the format that I submitted it in for paper publication (a PDF file) was not optimal for Kindle, but I had no knowledge of their own format. (Forget what it's called.)

From your comments, I guess the maps show up OK. George Skoch does great maps. You'll find his maps in many ACW books. (He used to do illustrations for my old Campaign magazine, way back in the day.)

I haven't even seen the paper version yet, though I expect to receive a few copies any day now.

donlowry20 May 2014 9:14 a.m. PST

Just received my copies yesterday! It's heavy! (Well, it is 680 6x9" pages.) But I think it looks great, if I do say so myself. I had it professionally formatted by a friend of my son that does that sort of thing for a living. And, as I said, I had the maps done by George Skoch, who also did the covers for me. You can do these things yourself, with CreateSpace, if you feel up to it, but I wanted to make sure they were done right.

Inkbiz30 May 2014 7:08 a.m. PST

Just nearing the few final chapters, and enjoying the book very much. Going in vacation soon and trying to hold off completing it until I am wholly relaxed poolside and able to fully digest the remainder. The contrasting generals, and the chronological timeline you employed really give you a broad feeling for the war itself, whereas most of my reading has been in a single isolated battle or campaign. Great work!

Best,
Bob

Thanks! And try not to spill margaritas on my book! Don't suppose you'd like to write a review of it on Amazon?
