Been mucking about with both. Cobbling bits from one t'other. Anyone prefer one over the other and why? Bob |

Charge! for me
but that's because it is how I discovered wargaming back in 1968 – so it was a personal as well as a publishing landmark ! Phil |

Charge! Great read and easy game to pick up, my intro to gaming in 1970. Managed to get a copy of the original book, which is definitely not being loaned to anyone, until I die! |

I prefer 'Charge!' as a book – but it is so long since I played both set of rules, I can't comment on either of them as rulesets. I think 'Charge!' is more charmingly written and illustrated, with more of a period feel. And its front and back cover photos are still inspiring classics in my mind.

Charge! is more Napoleonic in tone. Grant is SYW. |

Charge, because it plays faster. |

It's got to be The Wargame for me
and for exactly the same reasons that Phil prefers Charge!. |

The Wargame. I played that first, got Charge, went back to The Wargame. Started a forty-five year love affair with miniatures. |

I'm with Peter. The War Game was my first wargaming book and as such I've got an emotional investment. But I also prefer the way the game plays to Charge, which to me seems to be a generic H&M rules set rather than either a SYW or Napoleonic set. I think TWG has the better morale, gunnery and musketry rules, while Charge has simpler mechanisms and makes it a lot easier to detach subunits, giving you a bit more tactical flexibility. The nostalgia got to be so much I abandoned my Napoleonics (well, that's one reason) and have concentrated on SYW since. It was a good choice, as it produces good looking games as well as fun games. Ranks of big units is impressive:
The new edition of TWG includes some rules missed in the big, green hardback, as well as being a good read in itself. Why not try a couple of games of both to see which you prefer? Dal. |

Indeed I have and still sit on the fence! Started with one of Featherstone's books in the sixties, but these two classics are relatively new, so no nostalgic attachment to guide me :( or :) The reasons I enjoy both pretty much are along tbe lines of thought ventured above as well. Two very enjoyable games. |

The War Game is for me THE classic set of old school wargames. For all the same reasons everyone else has given, to me that is wargaming at its finest. Though I don't play them often now (to be honest I haven't played anything in the last year). But I plan to change that. |

The War Game. It has to do with the whole tone of the book as much as the rules. Henry |

I like Charge for its charm and I use the elementary rules when I game with my 8 year old son. These were the first rules I gamed with using my plastic ACW armies. The Wargame are a little more complex and I use these regularly, with a few house rules, with the more 'mature' Ilkleyittes I game with. |

I prefer The Wargame for the rules. Charge has a particular charm of it's own. |

I love reading Charge. The last time we tried to play it we lined up both sides and went forward. By the third turn both sides were wrecked. I haven't read The Wargame. |

Charge! Fun to read, fun to play. The War Game? Dull as dishwater and I can't figure out where the dull historical discourse ends and the rules begin. Still I like both and both have a place of honor in my library and wargame mind. |

Charge! For the same reason as yesthatphil |
