I was wonering if any of you can recommend rules for recreating actions between single ships on the high seas? I'm thinking about actions such as a surfaced U-boat being surprised by an "innocent" steamer which suddenly turns into a Q-ship, or maybe a German raider against an AMC. These types of actions I've never seen on a tabletop, maybe there's a reason for that..? |

One issue you have with one-on-one is one critical hit and game over. Course, that's how real life is too
Games about coastal forces are often one-on-one battles, so you might look at Coastal Command: link |

Sometime ago we played out the action between the German raider 'Thor' and HMS Alcantara, using the miniature rules from Avalon Hill's Bismarck game with some modifications. More recently we've played the same action, the action between Steir and the Hopkins (?) and HMS Jervis Bay and the Hipper using Mal Wright's own 'Convoy' tactical rules (NOT the abortion that came with Command at Sea's 'Deadly Waters'). The latter rules produced fairly quick games with realistic results. |

The old Avalon Hill game "Submarine" could handle the Q-ship vs submarine, the rules are geared toward just that kind of surface action. For more "normal" engagements I use Battlewagon by task force games. Both of these are board game but easily used as minis rules. |

For 'Hipper' read 'Scheer'. |
