I have been at this unit for days now, off and on, it has taken me much longer than I thought, I need to touch up here and there and add some green stuff(grass etc.) to the bases.

I will add the finished unit photos here when I get a chance.

Good inspiration for the 80 I have to paint!

Hi Mike

Give us a chance…they are next after we finish the Parthians/Sassanids. The demand for infantry will put them back a bit but not long.

Excellent!

I've found that painting eastern light horse always takes longer than I think it well – lots of little things that need to be done with quite a bit of variety.

You're going to do Sassanid infantry now?

Great work.
I am painting your eastern cataphracts and thinking of doing a Palmyran army. Any chance of seeing heavy infantry with the hood (like your eastern cataphract) as part of the Sassanid release?
Middle Romans would certainly be welcome at some point in the future.

Hi Hans

Have you looked at the A&A ranges, they were also sculpted by Adam.

Yes, very nice figures. The middle imperial legionaries are too active for my taste. I prefer your standing pose. In addition, some of the 4th century legionaries and Palmyran foot got quite large.

For Roman legionaries I will probably start out with Aventine early imperials with oval shield.

Hans

If we live long enough we will add Severian Legionaries to the Range (Adam has plans). As to the scale hooded legionaries, food for thought, we will see is all I can say at the moment.

The Palmyrene soldier in mail (Osprey, Rome's Enemies 5, plate F3) could equally be identified as a Sassanid.

Delbruck – the Palmyrene infantryman is a dead ringer for A&A's Palmyran swordsman. Often thought a pre-Islamic Arab army made an interesting option – horse archers, cataphracts, camels and some useful infantry.

Nicely done Keith – most timely in view of your recent shipment. I wondered about those balls with tails – your painted examples answered that one!

Actually I might be inclined to use the command pack as eastern heavy foot:

But if they are the same size as these, they are huge:

We will see what Adam comes up with.

I have used that A&A Command Pack with Essex Thorakitai, a Relic Carthaginian and some Polemarch Thorakitai (slightly smaller) and they work well. Certainly 'large' 28mm would describe them. I do much prefer larger figures.

These are great looking figures!

Yes it is a very intersting subject, which really has not been much explored by wargamers. But I might broaden it to include the early islamic Arabs, who probably had little resemblance to the traditional views of Arabs in turban and long topcoat.

Are you using these together as Palmyrenes or Syrians? There is certainly very little in 28mm available for early Arabs. For example, some Syrian horse archers may have copied parts of Parthian dress, wearing trousers, etc. Others appear barelegged in more traditional dress.

Mithridates09 May 2014 4:11 p.m. PST

Hans

Using them in a unit of Seleucid Thorakitai – more eastern than western looking was the aim.

The Hatrene heavy cavalry shown above would be a fine subject for Aventine……..
