I am painting some for a friend for your standard 28mm WRG/DBX/Warrior etc Anglo-Irish army or as Irish mercenaries. |

It is all conjectural. You could easily justify some elaboration or variant of a Viking raven banner, or some Celtic styled animal or Christian cross or other iconography. Personally I would opt for a raven with some Celtic elements to it. |

How about a raven and a cross, for those wishing to cover all the bases? |
Oh Bugger | 03 May 2014 2:59 p.m. PST |
Depends when really. Their employers or their own if they were fighting on their own account. Google Irish coats of arms for later stuff simplify it for earlier. If you don't know the names of the Galloglaich families google that. Its all there. |

Except for the parachute, this might work:

Hmmm. Thanks for the hints Oh . It looks like a St Andrew's cross would also work, and a blue Maltese cross on a white field also. Being "Scoottish" mercenaries, that make sense. Clan MacDougall:

And then there is MacSheehy:
Is the upper right quadrant "Argent, three Loch Ness monsters displayed proper"? from link A site devoted to Gallowglass/Galloglaich families. |

John, Did you basically post and then answer your own question? |
gavandjosh02 | 03 May 2014 7:22 p.m. PST |
I think you are on the right track. Depends on the period to some extent. I have McCabes (our family line) with a standard based on their heraldry. I'd go for the colours and a simple device. |
John the OFM | 03 May 2014 8:27 p.m. PST |
McCabe?
Did you basically post and then answer your own question? My first Google search turned up nothing. Then, with Oh 's help, I found the rest! |

I would not go for the St Andrews Cross as they were not fighting for Scotland. So no need for the national flag. The Mc Donnells have a black galley on their flag and its the right shape. You can see it on Druzhina's secon link. Try Ray's Dont throw a one blog and look at Flodden flags. Ray is kind enough to provide them free of charge. |
John the OFM | 04 May 2014 7:22 a.m. PST |
You're right. I like those Flodden flags and can find a familiar name or two there. |

You know you cannot blame your bad googlefoo on the gods, John ;) but thanks for the great info and debate. Cheers to ya and all. |

I used a Gonfalon from the Old Glory dark ages Scots and used it for medieval highlanders. I think that you could use one of those with the galloglaich and paint it up in one of the Irish family heraldry schemes as well. |

Whatever the design, they would not be too large. Since some times there is a curse which urges people to give gigantic banners to their miniatures. |
