I'm looking for a recommendation for 15mm Napoleonics for a 'large skirmish' project (40 – 100 figures per side). Ideally they would be:

1. Slender rather than chunky.

2. Simple, rather than with exaggerated detail.

3. Available in the UK.

Any thoughts?

Minifigs fit your bill very well.

1. Slender – check
2. Simple detail – check
3. Available in the UK – check

Good poses for skirmish gaming as well. They will also sell single figures if you request them.

I second SJDonovan's suggestion. Often overlooked, Dave Higg's sculpts need to be seen and painted to be appreciated. The variety of nations is pretty well complete as well.

Another vote for Minifigs.

love minifigs, the bulk of my growing napoleonic 15mm collection are minifigs.

Yes I agree with Minifigs. You won't get pose variations as they come in the one but they are a clean and smart figure with a good range of nations.

I'd suggest AB ticked all your boxes – and with variants in pose for most units. They are beautiful figures that will reward your efforts painting them.

Old Battle Honours? Also sculpted by Tony Barton…Too much detail?

Thanks for all the responses so far.

@Little Armies & Green Tiger – it is ages since I have seen any in the flesh, but I thought that AB & BH epitomised detailed 18mm figures?

AB and BH are lovely figures. I have a Prussian Napoleonic army that is almost entirely AB and a ACW Union army that is all BH. My freind's Confederates are all BH. One caveat: thin flag staffs, thin bayonets. I have a bit of broken bayonets and staffs.

Whirlwind,
I guess it depends which figures you are painting :)

They are detailed – but I find personally that the sculpting style and quality of casting makes the AB figures very easy to paint. If you look closely at his figures you can generally see little "tells" that help you (so you can see just the "suggestion" of a crease around the cuff on Spanish Line Infantry should you need to add them)- they are very "clean" sculpts that really suit my low level of painting skill.

It generally takes a little practice with them to learn in what order to put the colours on, and a test figure is usually a good idea – but once you get past this they are pretty easy to do. The detail like straps is normally raised from the surrounding surface – I undercoat white so a French pack is simply a question of carefully painting thinned out brown paint onto the "furry" surfaces and running it up to the white straps. I paint my figures with Army Painter and that brings out the character in the figures quite nicely.

You can see some almost finished pictures here: link
The final pictures of the Spanish and French on the table have had the AP applied (but not the varnish to matt them down again) – in the preceding pictures the figures are awaiting their AP.

How much detail you choose to paint is up to you – I try to do the ABs justice but sometimes leave details unpainted, on the basis that if I cock it up the error will attract more attention than the missing detail. So what you can't see in the picture with the Legere Carabinier is that I gave up painting the white cross on the crown of the bearskin – I couldn't do it neatly freehand.

Good luck with your project – show the results on TMP!
